Paris Hilton Joins Push for Transparency in California Youth Treatment Facilities

Paris Hilton has teamed up with California lawmakers to advocate for legislation aimed at bringing more transparency to facilities caring for troubled teens. The bill, supported by the heiress and media personality, seeks to increase accountability by requiring youth treatment centers to disclose their use of disciplinary methods like restraints and seclusion rooms.

Testifying in a legislative hearing, Hilton shared her own traumatic experiences as a teenager in a Utah facility, urging lawmakers to take action to prevent similar abuses. The bipartisan bill, authored by Senators Shannon Grove, Aisha Wahab, and Angelique Ashby, passed committee with wide support. It mandates that facilities report details of disciplinary actions taken, with the state department regulating these centers required to make the information public on a quarterly basis.

Hilton's advocacy stems from her own experiences of physical and mental abuse during her teenage years. Her efforts led to stricter oversight of youth treatment centers in Utah and advocacy for federal reforms. She believes the proposed legislation in California will provide much-needed transparency and accountability, preventing further abuse of vulnerable youth.

Between 2015 and 2020, California sent over 1,240 children to out-of-state facilities due to a lack of local options, but reports of abuse prompted a change in policy. Legislation passed in 2021 banned out-of-state residential centers, redirecting minors to in-state facilities. However, current laws don't mandate reporting on disciplinary practices, leaving vulnerable children at risk.

Senator Grove emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in protecting California's youth, particularly those who have experienced trauma or exploitation. The proposed legislation marks a significant step towards safeguarding the well-being of these vulnerable individuals.
