Peel police have arrested 13 people tied to violent home invasions and car thefts. The suspects are part of a dangerous group involved in stabbings, shootings, and robberies. Police shared the updates at a press event on Tuesday.
The operation, called Project Ghost, led to 197 criminal charges against the suspects. Police confirmed that five of the 13 people charged are currently out on bail.
Terrifying Attack on a Family
Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich described one of the most disturbing cases. He said, “Imagine being asleep at 3 a.m. with your family. Then masked men with weapons break in, stab you, and rob your home.”
In that case, both the husband and wife suffered stab wounds. The criminals forced their way into the house and attacked them without hesitation.
How the Investigation Began
The case started last year after two early morning home invasions on August 1, 2024. Three suspects first tried to break into a house on Maybeck Drive in Brampton. They aimed to steal a BMW parked outside but failed to enter.
Around 30 minutes later, the same suspects entered a home on Boathouse Road. They demanded keys to a Mercedes-Benz and then stabbed three people inside. One victim was nearly killed when a stab wound missed his heart by inches.
The suspects escaped both scenes in a white Acura.
Link to a Separate Shooting
On September 10, a Lamborghini driver was shot in Mississauga. Police arrested two suspects and charged them with attempted murder. Investigators later linked this attack to the same group involved in the home invasions.
Project Ghost connected the crimes through seized phones and statements from one of the accused. Police found evidence linking the group to 13 more incidents involving break-ins, thefts, and violence in both Peel and Halton regions.
Criminal Network Roles and Strategy
Each group member had a role. Some scouted homes and cars. Others carried out the break-ins. Some sold the stolen property. Adults in the group even recruited teenagers to help commit the crimes.
Detectives said the group targeted expensive homes and luxury cars, stealing high-end items and jewelry. In total, the group stole property worth about $1.8 million. Police have recovered about one-third of that amount.
Community Impact and Police Response
Police say the group caused fear and harm across the region. “Organized crime harms our community,” said Milinovich. He explained how these networks use vulnerable youth and pull them into crime.
He added, “Breaking up these networks and offering youth another path is vital.”
