Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren talked about what lies ahead in their acting careers while promoting their upcoming Netflix crime comedy, The Thursday Murder Club.
Pierce Brosnan has shared honest thoughts about his future in film. The 72-year-old actor sat down with Helen Mirren during a recent interview while promoting their new Netflix crime comedy The Thursday Murder Club. The conversation turned to retirement, but Brosnan made it clear he has no plans to stop acting.
Helen, who also stars in the film, reflected on how lucky actors are to work without a set retirement age. “We love our work and I think we are very lucky in that our work doesn’t have a sort of cutoff date, you know? If you’re lucky enough to keep going, you keep going,” she said.
Brosnan Says He Cannot Imagine Retiring
The former James Bond actor admitted that acting has shaped his life. “I’ve been an actor all my life,” said Brosnan. “I don’t know what else to do at this point in my life. I’ve been very fortunate to play roles that have sustained me and my family. The doing of being an actor and the constant doing of it is invigorating.”
For him, the thrill of performing has never faded. Brosnan made it clear that stepping away from acting is not something he is considering.
A New Film with Familiar Faces
Their new project, The Thursday Murder Club, is based on Richard Osman’s bestselling novel. The story follows four friends in a retirement home who spend their days investigating unsolved crimes. But when a mysterious death occurs close to them, the group finds themselves pulled into a real-life case.
The film, directed by Chris Columbus, features Helen Mirren as Elizabeth, a retired spy, and Brosnan as Ron, a former union activist. The cast also includes Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim, a retired psychiatrist, and Celia Imrie as Joyce, a former nurse.
Helen described her character as a woman who refuses to slow down after retirement. “Like Ron, she’s lived a life of great power,” she explained. “She’s been very powerful in the past and very engaged in her rather complicated profession. The energy and the intellectual requirements for that don’t just suddenly stop when you retire. The engine doesn’t stop.”
Brosnan Reflects on Fame
Alongside his career plans, Brosnan also spoke about the experience of fame. He admitted it has been a strange journey. “I enjoy the work that I do and I enjoy the effect the work has on people,” he said. “You want to please people, you want to entertain them. You want to have a great night in the cinema, great night in the theater, job done. Move on. Do it again.”
Helen, however, views fame differently. “I’m always unaware of it, really,” she said. “Honestly, I’m not a star the way Pierce is a star or other people I’ve worked with.”
No End in Sight
For now, Brosnan shows no sign of slowing down. With The Thursday Murder Club set to bring mystery, humour, and a fresh twist on retirement life, both Brosnan and Mirren prove that age does not have to stop passion, drive, or creativity.
