Pistons' valiant effort in 28th loss mirrors NBA history; despite defeat, resilience and growth remain pivotal. (Rappler)

December 29, 2023

The Pistons experienced their 28th consecutive defeat, a loss that stands out from their previous downturns, equating the longest NBA losing streak. Despite leading by 21 points against the Celtics, they succumbed to a 128-122 defeat in overtime, marking the first time this season they held such a substantial lead and reached overtime since their last win months ago.

Coach Monty Williams lauded the team's resilience despite the daunting streak, expressing pride in their unwavering effort. He acknowledged the prevailing skepticism about their team but remains optimistic that their persistent dedication will yield positive results eventually.

With a record of 2-29, the Pistons have matched the infamous Philadelphia 76ers' "Trust the Process" era with 28 consecutive losses. To avoid surpassing the NBA's longest losing streak, they face a crucial home game against Toronto. Only the NFL's Chicago Cardinals have had a longer losing streak in major North American sports, enduring 29 straight losses from 1942-1945.

Guard Cade Cunningham, scoring 22 points in the first half, expressed a desire to move beyond just ending the streak and aims for higher goals, emphasizing the importance of establishing consistent winning patterns and team synergy.

Although Detroit held a significant lead, Boston rallied, erasing a 21-point deficit with a spirited comeback, ultimately securing the win in overtime. Despite the resilient efforts from Detroit, led by Cunningham and others, Derrick White's tenacity in overtime propelled Boston to victory, extending their winning streak.

While Williams acknowledged the pain of defeat, he emphasized the team's resilience and potential for sustained success if they maintain their toughness and execution while minimizing errors.

Boston's Jayson Tatum's stellar performance, delivering 31 points and 10 assists, contributed significantly to their fourth consecutive win and ninth in the last ten games. Cunningham acknowledged the competitiveness of every game in the NBA, highlighting the need for consistent effort and growth despite the challenges.

Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and Bojan Bogdanovich's collective efforts for Detroit showcased promising individual performances amidst the team's struggles.

The Pistons, having set a new NBA record for consecutive losses in a season, aim to overturn their misfortunes with resilience and a focus on improvement, even amid adversity reminiscent of the Sixers' infamous losing streak spanning two seasons.
