The investigation into the shocking killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has uncovered new leads, though many questions remain unanswered. Police now believe that the gunman, who ambushed Thompson outside a hotel in New York City, likely fled the city soon after the crime, possibly on a bus. Authorities have also found a backpack the shooter left behind in Central Park, raising hopes for further clues.

Three days after the fatal shooting, investigators still have not identified the suspect, nor have they determined a clear motive. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed that authorities are exploring the possibility that the gunman could have been a disgruntled employee or a client with grievances against UnitedHealthcare. However, the police have not confirmed this theory.

A key break in the case came when police analyzed video footage showing the suspect’s movements after the shooting. The gunman was seen riding a bicycle into Central Park before catching a taxi to a bus terminal offering services to New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, D.C. While police were able to confirm he entered the bus station, there is no video footage of him leaving, leading them to believe that he managed to escape the city by bus.

The backpack, discovered in Central Park during a large-scale search, was confirmed to be the one the shooter had with him during the attack. Though investigators have not revealed what the bag contained, they are carefully examining it for any evidence that could link the gunman to the crime. Given that the shooter wore a mask for most of his time in the city, including during the attack, the discovery of the backpack is a significant lead in what has so far been a puzzling case.

The gunman arrived in New York City on November 24 and, after nearly two weeks, carried out the shooting on December 4, just outside the Hilton Hotel, where UnitedHealthcare was hosting its annual investor conference. Police learned that the suspect arrived in the city on a bus from Atlanta, though they are still investigating where he boarded. At a hostel in Manhattan, where he stayed, the suspect used fake identification to check in and paid with cash. Investigators found images of the man from the hostel’s lobby, showing him without his mask for a brief moment, though he remained largely concealed throughout his stay.

A reward poster is displayed on a light pole outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was tragically shot on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

Police have also collected DNA samples from discarded items, including a water bottle and a protein bar wrapper, to help identify the gunman. They are hopeful that these samples, along with data from a phone found along the suspect’s escape route, may provide further leads. While the investigation is ongoing, no concrete motive has been established. The words “delay,” “deny,” and “defend” were found scrawled on the ammunition used in the shooting, a phrase that echoes criticism often directed at insurance companies for delaying claims.

Thompson, a father of two who had worked with UnitedHealthcare for over 20 years, was leading the company during the tragic incident. The killing has deeply affected the healthcare industry, causing many companies to rethink their security measures. UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, has promised to support Thompson’s family and assist in the ongoing investigation.

In the wake of the incident, some healthcare companies have taken additional security measures, even temporarily closing offices to ensure employee safety. The investigation is continuing, with law enforcement determined to bring the gunman to justice.
