A rapidly spreading wildfire near Port Alberni has led officials to declare a local state of emergency. The blaze has already scorched more than 21 square kilometres and forced many residents to leave their homes. CTV News
Port Alberni officials have declared a state of local emergency as a fast-moving wildfire burns south of the community. The Mount Underwood wildfire has destroyed over 21.5 square kilometres of forest and forced evacuations. The blaze also shut down the main road between Port Alberni and Bamfield.
Severe Drought Fuels Blaze
The B.C. Wildfire Service says this fire is unusual for Vancouver Island. Persistent drought and little rainfall since June have created extreme conditions. Power outages have hit hundreds in the Bamfield area, which is only accessible by logging roads through Youbou. Authorities urge non-residents to stay away due to limited services.
Evacuations and Alerts
The Clayoquot Regional District ordered the evacuation of hundreds of properties along the east side of Alberni Inlet. The Cowichan Valley Regional District issued a similar order for a rural area between Port Alberni and Nitinat. The Cameron Heights neighbourhood in Port Alberni remains under evacuation alert, and residents must be ready to leave quickly.
Fire Expected to Grow
Fire information officer Karley Desrosiers says the blaze is not currently threatening Port Alberni, Bamfield, or Youbou directly. However, it is expected to grow without significant rainfall. Dry conditions, high temperatures, wind, and steep slopes are fuelling its spread. Helicopters with night vision and air tankers worked through Tuesday night as the fire reached within 12 kilometres of Port Alberni.
Largest Island Wildfire This Year
The Mount Underwood fire began Monday and quickly became Vancouver Island’s largest wildfire this season. It is burning at an aggressive rate, with difficult terrain slowing firefighting efforts. The fire is less than 20 kilometres from the Wesley Ridge blaze, which has already forced evacuations east of Port Alberni.
Smoke and Health Warnings
Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for inland Vancouver Island. Smoke will linger for 24 to 48 hours. Coastal areas from Tofino to Sooke may also see smoke at times. Health officials advise limiting outdoor activities, especially for seniors, pregnant people, young children, those with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers.
Cause Under Investigation
The fire’s cause remains unknown. Across the province, about 90 wildfires are burning, with 10 considered out of control.
