In Toronto, Otto Porter Jr. displayed a smile upon learning that Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic referred to him as a calming presence within the team.

"That's my job," Porter remarked in response to Rajakovic's statement.

During the Raptors' disappointing 112-103 loss to the Miami Heat, Porter contributed 14 minutes of play, achieving a team-leading plus-14 defensive rating along with two rebounds and an assist off the bench. Rajakovic, impressed by Porter's solid performance, confirmed that Porter will become a regular fixture in the Raptors' rotation.

Regardless of whether the team is behind or in the lead, my goal is to keep a composed attitude, promote calmness, and concentrate on carrying out the correct actions on the court," Porter highlighted after the practice session at the OVO Athletic Centre. "I aim to underscore the significance of team cohesion, focus, and successfully implementing our game strategy.

"My main priority is to foster the belief that when our rivals build momentum, we can tighten our defense and achieve a pivotal defensive stop or score as required."

Porter's season stats average 2.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.2 assists across 10 games. His return to regular playing time has been gradual due to his foot surgery last season, limiting him to just eight games in the previous season.

"It's a continuous process after coming back from that injury," acknowledged the 30-year-old Porter, now in his 10th NBA season. "Recovery takes time, and I've been away from the game for almost a year.

While I might not engage in consecutive matches, my daily priority is conditioning my body and collaborating with coaches to reestablish a rhythm in gameplay. The goal is to actively contribute to and bolster the team.

Toronto encounters difficulties after experiencing back-to-back losses, particularly the disheartening setback against Miami. During that game, the Miami Heat launched a 16-0 run in the early moments of the third quarter. Head coach Rajakovic mentioned that they engaged in a constructive film session and had a meaningful team discussion. The key takeaway is the team's pressing need to enhance their performance substantially.

"We possess various skills and opportunities to improve."

Center Jakob Poeltl highlighted the team's ongoing search for the right formula for success, citing that aggressive defense has been lacking in their recent games.

"At the start of the season, we showcased a high-intensity defensive approach, but we've somewhat deviated from that," Poeltl observed. "We may have focused too much on finding solutions for our close-game losses and lost sight of what brought us success initially, which was our aggressive defense."

Porter's experience and guidance could aid Toronto in revitalizing its defensive strategies. As a small forward, Porter is anticipated to complement OG Anunoby and Scottie Barnes in fortifying the team's defense once he regains full conditioning.

Rajakovic observed, "He is advancing, working on discovering his rhythm and quickness in his actions. His defensive instincts, particularly around the rim, are remarkable. His ability to create disturbances and his overall impact on the court positively influence us on both defense and offense."

The Raptors are scheduled to face the Charlotte Hornets on Friday, followed by a matchup against the New York Knicks on Monday, concluding a two-game series added to their schedule after not advancing in the NBA's in-season tournament.
