Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Corey Mace looks down during the first half of CFL football action in Regina, on Sunday, June 23, 2024.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders will face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in their final preseason game this Friday at home. However, head coach Corey Mace has decided to rest most starters. This move gives back-up players a prime opportunity to prove their worth before the regular season.
Starters Sit Out to Stay Healthy
Coach Mace explained the decision to rest key players: “We want to keep our team healthy heading into Week One.” The tight schedule with a quick turnaround after Friday’s game influenced this choice. The Roughriders also aim to avoid injuries before the regular season opener.
Several key offensive starters will not dress for this game, including Trevor Harris, A.J. Ouellette, Samuel Emilus, Kian Schaffer-Baker, and Logan Ferland. On defense, players like C.J. Reaves, Rolan Milligan Jr., and Jameer Thurman will also remain sidelined.
Back-up Quarterback Jake Maier to Start
With Trevor Harris out, Jake Maier will take the quarterback role for the Roughriders. Maier joined Saskatchewan via trade from Calgary last December after four seasons with the Stampeders.
Maier shared confidence about the upcoming game: “We have a good plan. We’re playing at home and ready to execute.” Last week, Maier got valuable game time, throwing eight completions for 80 yards in a narrow loss.
He emphasized that preseason games still matter. “The outcome absolutely matters. It’s how you earn a job in this league.”
Roster Bubble Players to Shine
The preseason finale is a critical chance for roster bubble players. Many athletes will compete for the last spots on the team. Mace acknowledged the tough decisions ahead but praised the depth.
“We want to see them go out there and execute,” said Mace. “We appreciate their effort. It’s an opportunity, even if the spot isn’t ours, it could be someone else’s.”
Final roster cuts are scheduled for Saturday, adding pressure on players to perform Friday.
Kickoff Postponed Due to Air Quality
Originally set for 7 p.m., kickoff will now be at 8 p.m. due to poor air quality in Regina. Smoke from nearby wildfires caused a spike in the air quality health index, reaching dangerous levels.
The CFL, the teams, and the Players’ Association agreed to delay the game for player safety. Regina’s air quality index jumped from 7 at 2 p.m. to over 10 by mid-afternoon. The league closely monitors conditions per its weather policy, which mandates halting play if the index hits 8 or higher.
Despite early confidence from the Roughriders that the game would start on time, updates prompted the delay.
Blue Bombers’ Roster Notes
Winnipeg’s lineup shows QB Zach Collaros dressing, though Chris Streveler is slated to start. Collaros is serving a suspension but is eligible to play in preseason games. He will miss one regular-season game later in the year.
The Blue Bombers are keeping several regular starters out, including defensive ends Willie Jefferson and James Vaughters and linebackers Kyrie Wilson and Tony Jones.
What to Expect Friday Night
This preseason finale will highlight Saskatchewan’s back-up talent. The Roughriders hope to keep their starters fresh and healthy. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will also test their depth with key veterans resting.
Despite the delayed kickoff, fans at Mosaic Stadium should see an exciting battle of players fighting for roster spots. For many, this game is their best chance to make a lasting impression on coaches.
Stay tuned as both teams prepare for the CFL season kickoff with a thrilling preseason conclusion.
