Ryan Gosling stars in the upcoming film Project Hail Mary. MGM Studios

The first trailer for Project Hail Mary shows Ryan Gosling unsure about traveling to space. The sci-fi movie will release on March 20, 2026. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, it also stars Sandra Hüller and Milana Vayntrub. The film is based on Andy Weir’s novel.

Plot Overview

Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship. He has no memory of how he got there or what his mission is. He soon learns he must save Earth from a disaster. During his journey, he meets an alien who is also trying to save its species.

Trailer Highlights

The trailer starts with Sandra Hüller’s character warning, “The sun is not the only star dying. If we do nothing, everything on this planet will go extinct.” Gosling’s character expresses hesitation about the mission. He says, “I understand the stakes—I do. But my place is in the classroom.”

Production Details

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller direct this film, adapting Drew Goddard’s screenplay from Weir’s 2021 book. Gosling and Weir join the producers along with Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, and Rachel O’Connor.

This marks Lord and Miller’s first film as directors since 2014’s 22 Jump Street. They had worked on Solo: A Star Wars Story but left before completion.

At CinemaCon, Gosling joked about the directors: “They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh-cry.”
