A major Fête Nationale celebration in Quebec City came to a sudden stop on June 23 after strong storms moved toward the region. Police asked people to leave the Plains of Abraham, where the celebrations were underway, to keep everyone safe.
The evacuation order was given at 8:45 p.m., shortly after the performances had started. The site had been full of excited festivalgoers ready to enjoy the music and shows planned for the night.
Weather Poses Immediate Risk
Dark storm clouds rolled over the city just as celebrations were beginning. On social media, government officials announced:
“Due to dangerous weather conditions, the Plains are being evacuated immediately. If you are on site, please calmly follow the evacuation plan displayed on the screens at the front of the stage. Please be careful.”
This message appeared on stage screens, and officers directed the crowd to leave in an orderly fashion.
Artists’ Performances Cancelled
Several popular artists had been scheduled to perform around 9 p.m. These included Ariane Moffatt, Bleu Jeans Bleu, Claude Dubois, and Garou. Fans who had gathered in anticipation were left disappointed, but safety came first.
Storm Warning Issued for the Region
Weather experts had already issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area. Environment and Climate Change Canada warned that the storm could bring strong wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and hail as big as nickels.
Just hours earlier, two tornado warnings had been declared in areas north of Quebec City. One warning was issued for La Tuque around 3:15 p.m., and the other was issued for L’Étape at about 7 p.m.
Officials Prioritize Public Safety
City officials and event organizers acted quickly once the weather began to worsen. Their goal was to prevent any injuries or emergencies by clearing the event space before the worst of the storm arrived.
Luckily, the evacuation went smoothly, with people calmly following instructions. No injuries were reported during the process.
Public Reaction
Many festivalgoers expressed their disappointment but understood the need to leave. Some took shelter nearby, while others headed home early.
While celebrations had to be paused, the quick action by authorities helped avoid what could have been a dangerous situation for the large crowd.
Future Updates Expected
Event organizers have not yet announced if the performances will be rescheduled. People are being advised to stay tuned to local updates for weather alerts and any news about postponed shows.
