Rainfall Warning Issued
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a rainfall warning for several areas of southern Manitoba, with some regions expected to see as much as 50 millimetres of rain this weekend.
The alert covers a wide stretch of the province, including Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie, Pinawa, Gimli, and Lac du Bonnet. The weather agency said conditions could become messy beginning Friday night, as a warm front pushes north into Canada.
Storms and Showers to Begin Friday Night
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across the region late Friday and continue into Saturday morning. The front will bring unstable conditions, and residents could see periods of heavy downpours and gusty winds overnight.
ECCC said the most intense rainfall will begin late Saturday afternoon or early evening as the weather system slows and stalls over southern Manitoba.
Rain to Intensify Saturday Evening
“Steadier and intensifying rain will begin late Saturday afternoon or early evening as the front stalls for the next day,” the weather warning stated. The system is expected to linger into Sunday, with rainfall finally easing by the afternoon as the front shifts east into northwestern Ontario.
Forecasters expect up to 50 millimetres of rain to fall between Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. Some localized areas could see even higher totals depending on the movement of the system and storm activity.
Residents Urged to Stay Alert
ECCC encouraged Manitobans to stay updated on the latest weather alerts as the situation could change quickly. Additional warnings or special weather statements may be issued if rainfall amounts or storm intensity increase.
Heavy rainfall can lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Drivers should use caution, as heavy rain can reduce visibility and create slick road conditions. Those planning outdoor activities are advised to monitor forecasts and prepare for wet, windy weather throughout the weekend.
A Wet Start to October
This latest system marks a soggy start to October for much of southern Manitoba. After a dry end to September, the province is now expected to receive several rounds of rain in the coming days. The moisture will help replenish dry ground in some areas, though it may also cause brief flooding in spots with limited drainage.
As of Friday morning, temperatures across southern Manitoba remained mild, hovering in the mid-teens, with humidity increasing ahead of the approaching front. Cooler air is expected to move in behind the system once it passes through on Sunday.
Residents across the province are advised to keep umbrellas, rain gear, and sump pumps ready as the stormy weekend approaches.
