Rayo Vallecano will be playing in the Conference League this season, only their second European campaign.

Barcelona’s perfect start in La Liga ended after a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano. The Spanish champions dropped points for the first time this season in a match overshadowed by VAR technology failures.

Teen star Lamine Yamal gave Barcelona the lead before half-time. Rayo equalised in the second half through Fran Perez, leaving Barca frustrated in a tense encounter.

Yamal Shines with Early Breakthrough

Barcelona looked confident in the opening half. Their 18-year-old sensation, Lamine Yamal, earned a penalty after being fouled by defender Pep Chavarria.

Yamal stepped up calmly and converted from the spot in the 40th minute, putting Barcelona 1-0 ahead. The teenager once again proved his growing importance to the Catalan side.

VAR Chaos Adds Controversy

The goal, however, was surrounded by controversy. The VAR system was unavailable at the time of the penalty.

Referees informed both managers before kick-off that VAR images were not reaching the stadium. This meant no incidents could be reviewed during critical phases of the game.

Although the assistant referee briefly suggested the images returned after 11 minutes, they were soon lost again. When Yamal won the penalty, no replays were available for confirmation.

Rayo Vallecano argued it was not a penalty. But replays later suggested the referee’s decision was correct. Still, the absence of VAR left fans, players, and managers deeply frustrated.

Rashford’s Loan Struggles Continue

Barcelona’s new loan signing Marcus Rashford made his third appearance since arriving from Manchester United.

The England forward replaced Raphinha in the 62nd minute. However, Rashford again struggled to make an impact in a tough away atmosphere and on a poor-quality pitch.

His best contribution came from a precise corner delivery, but teammate Eric Garcia headed the ball over the bar. Rashford is yet to leave a significant mark in Barcelona colours.

Rayo Vallecano Fight Back

Rayo showed resilience after the break. Substitute Fran Perez equalised in the 67th minute with a brilliant volley from a corner.

The home side even had chances to take the lead. Jorge de Frutos missed a golden opportunity when his shot was saved by goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

Later, Sergio Camello came close, but Garcia produced another fine save to keep Barcelona level. Rayo also had a goal ruled out for offside in a tense closing stage.

Barcelona Slip to Fourth Place

This draw ended Barcelona’s two-match winning streak in La Liga. With seven points from three games, the defending champions dropped to fourth place.

Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao sit at the top, each with nine points from three straight victories. Barcelona now face pressure to respond quickly to avoid losing early ground in the title race.

Expert Explains VAR Breakdown

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague clarified the VAR chaos. Speaking to Premier Sports, he said the referee had no access to video replays during key moments.

According to Balague, both captains and managers were informed before the game. Still, Rayo Vallecano felt unfairly treated by the penalty decision.

Despite the controversy, Balague insisted the referee’s original call looked correct on closer inspection.

What’s Next for Barcelona?

Barcelona will now focus on regaining momentum after this setback. The defending champions cannot afford further slip-ups with rivals Madrid already setting the pace.

The clash against Rayo Vallecano will be remembered less for the football and more for the VAR failure that shaped its outcome.
