Ontario health officials have identified nine cases of listeriosis linked to the consumption of Silk® and Great Value brand plant-based refrigerated beverages. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore confirmed five hospitalizations in connection with this outbreak.
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium responsible for listeriosis, has prompted a recall of these products. Dr. Moore urged residents not to consume the affected beverages, stressing the severity of listeriosis, a rare but serious illness.
The recall affects various almond, cashew, coconut, and oat milk products, as listed on the CFIA website. Consumers are advised to regularly check for updates on additional recalls as the investigation unfolds.
Residents are urged to inspect their refrigerators for recalled items and dispose of them immediately if found. Listeria contamination may not alter the taste, smell, or appearance of food, making vigilance crucial.
Dr. Moore emphasized the risk to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis typically appear within two to three weeks of exposure but can manifest up to 70 days later.
Initial signs include flu-like symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and fever, potentially progressing to more severe conditions like meningitis and bloodstream infections, particularly risky for newborns and older adults.
