On July 29, 1981, Prince Charles and Princess Diana walked down the aisle together. Hello Magazine

In 1981, the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer captivated the world and was hailed as a real-life fairy tale. The engagement announcement came on February 24, 1981, when 32-year-old Charles proposed to 19-year-old Diana. This marriage marked a historic moment, as Diana was the first British citizen to wed an heir to the British throne in 300 years.
The couple had met only about a dozen times before the proposal, yet their wedding was celebrated as the "wedding of the century." Charles, overcome with emotion, reportedly told a friend, "There were several times when I was perilously close to crying from the sheer joy of it all." Diana, too, was moved, describing the event as "heaven, amazing, wonderful," although she was so nervous walking down the aisle that she feared her knees would make a noise.

Leading up to their nuptials, the couple hosted a grand rehearsal, including a lavish ball at Buckingham Palace attended by 1,400 guests. The celebration featured a spectacular fireworks display and a bonfire in Hyde Park, with 250 musicians playing 'The Royal Fireworks.' Diana spent the night with her bridal party, waking early for the big day.

St Paul's Cathedral was chosen for the wedding, marking the first major royal event at the venue since 1501. Charles preferred St Paul’s due to its spaciousness and acoustic qualities, making it a unique choice over the more commonly used Westminster Abbey.

The wedding was a major spectacle, with over 3,500 guests including the Queen, Prince Philip, and other European royals. The streets of London were lined with 600,000 spectators, and around 750 million people watched the event on television.

Diana's wedding dress was unforgettable. Hello Magazine

Diana’s wedding dress, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, was a masterpiece of silk taffeta adorned with pearls, sequins, and antique lace. The gown featured a dramatic 25-foot train, the longest in royal history. David Emanuel reflected, "We wanted her to look young and fresh... St Paul’s is vast, so it couldn’t have been a quiet little dress." Diana’s sparkling tiara, from the Spencer family vault, added to her fairytale look.

Diana made a grand entrance at her wedding.

Arriving at the wedding, Diana and Charles were greeted by enthusiastic crowds, with the bridal party including two pageboys and five bridesmaids. The couple’s ceremony included a significant departure from tradition, with Diana choosing not to include the word "obey" in her vows.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds took an open-topped State landau to Buckingham Palace, where they shared a famous kiss on the balcony—a tradition that would later be repeated by other royal couples.

Inside the palace, they enjoyed a wedding breakfast with 120 guests and an impressive five-foot-tall wedding cake, made by David Avery of the Naval Armed Forces. The cake was decorated with the couple’s coats of arms and initials.
