The Los Angeles Lakers had hoped to don their black "city edition" uniforms for their In-Season Tournament semifinal against the New Orleans Pelicans, but the league vetoed this choice due to concerns about the visual compatibility with the specialized court design at T-Mobile Arena, as reported by ESPN's Dave McMenamin.
As per the Lakers' official uniform schedule, they are scheduled to wear their gold "icon" jerseys for the game, while the Pelicans will be in their white "association" uniforms.
Upon learning about the disapproval of wearing black jerseys, a Lakers player expressed dissatisfaction, stating, "That's disappointing."
The preference for the black jerseys might stem from their appealing aesthetics or perhaps a hint of superstition. The Lakers boast an undefeated record of 4-0 in their city edition uniforms this season, all during In-Season Tournament games, including their recent 106-103 victory against Phoenix in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
In a nod to superstition, it's worth noting that LeBron James clinched the 2016 title while sporting Cleveland's black uniforms in Game 7, and the Lakers had a notable 4-1 record in the 2020 NBA bubble while wearing the "Black Mamba" uniforms in honor of Kobe Bryant, as pointed out by McMenamin.
Presumably, the Lakers simply favor the appearance of the black uniforms. Nevertheless, the gold jerseys, which represent a classic and iconic look for the team, serve as an acceptable alternative.
