Rio Ngumoha scored a goal and assist during Liverpool's win against Athletic Club.

Liverpool wrapped up a successful night at Anfield with two pre-season wins against Athletic Club. The Reds clinched 4-1 and 3-2 victories in a friendly double-header that showcased rising talents and new signings.

Rio Ngumoha Steals the Spotlight Early

Sixteen-year-old sensation Rio Ngumoha continued to grab headlines. He opened the scoring just two minutes into the first game with a brilliant curling strike. Moments later, he assisted Darwin Núñez for Liverpool’s second, underlining his impact early on.

Ben Doak, another young star, described Ngumoha as “ridiculous” after the match. “He is going to have some career ahead of him,” Doak told LFCTV. “So sharp and so talented.”

Ngumoha’s electric start set the tone for the Reds. Doak’s cross forced an own goal from goalkeeper Alex Padilla, pushing the lead to 3-0 before halftime. Harvey Elliott sealed the 4-1 win with a composed finish in the second half.

Luca Stephenson’s misplaced pass allowed Gorka Guruzeta to score a consolation for the visitors, the only setback in an otherwise dominant first fixture.

Ekitike Delivers First Assist in Second Game

In the second match, manager Arne Slot fielded a near full-strength side, missing only Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker. New signing Hugo Ekitike wasted no time making his mark, setting up Mohamed Salah in the 14th minute with a smart pullback.

The Reds looked dangerous throughout, creating chances with fluid passing and high energy. But defensive frailties resurfaced. A moment of hesitation allowed Oihan Sancet to slot home the equaliser.

Cody Gakpo put on a show with a goal and forced an own goal from Athletic, ensuring Liverpool regained control. Despite a missed penalty from Salah – a rare sight at Anfield – the Reds held on for a 3-2 win.

Tributes to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva

Both games paused in the 20th minute as fans paid emotional tribute to Diogo Jota and his late brother Andre Silva. The crowd rose to sing Jota’s name, marking a touching moment in an otherwise spirited evening.

Slot Reflects on Pre-Season Performances

Post-match, manager Arne Slot expressed satisfaction with the team’s attacking output.

“We created a lot of chances across both games and scored seven goals. That’s very pleasing to see,” said Slot.

He praised Ekitike’s early influence and highlighted Ngumoha’s consistency through pre-season.

However, he pointed to defensive lapses and set-piece goals conceded as areas for improvement. “When you play Crystal Palace next week, you can’t allow those kinds of goals,” he added.

Injury Update and What’s Next for Liverpool

Slot confirmed that both Van Dijk and Alisson are expected to return for the Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace on August 10. But concerns remain over Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley, who are in a race to recover before the Premier League opener.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth follows on August 15 at Anfield, live on Friday Night Football.

Key Takeaways from the Double Header

  • Ngumoha’s rise continues as he delivers a goal and assist.
  • Ekitike announces himself with a slick assist to Salah.
  • Gakpo looks sharp heading into the season.
  • Defensive issues linger, especially on set-pieces.
  • Salah’s missed penalty a rare misfire, but unlikely to impact his confidence.

Liverpool fans have reasons to be excited. The young stars are rising, new signings are fitting in, and Arne Slot’s attacking style is beginning to take shape.
