Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting in 'Romeo and Juliet' circa 1968

Olivia Hussey Eisley, the celebrated actress best known for her portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s iconic yet controversial 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73.

According to a heartfelt announcement on her Instagram page, she died peacefully at home on December 27, surrounded by her family.

Hussey's illustrious career spanned decades, including standout roles such as Rosalie Otterbourne in Death on the Nile opposite Peter Ustinov, Norma Bates in Psycho IV: The Beginning, and her portrayal of Mary in Zeffirelli’s 1977 television epic Jesus of Nazareth.

Despite her professional success, her role in Romeo and Juliet remained a defining, yet contentious, part of her legacy. In 2022, Hussey and her co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, claiming that Zeffirelli violated their consent by filming them in a nude scene without their knowledge during their teenage years. At the time of filming, Hussey was 15, and Whiting was 16. The actors alleged significant emotional distress and sought $100 million in damages, pointing out the film's substantial financial success, which reportedly exceeded $500 million.

The lawsuit contrasted with Hussey's earlier comments. In 2018, she described the nudity as “not a big deal” during a promotional interview for her memoir. The controversy surrounding the film's release in 1968, however, was undeniable. Nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, Romeo and Juliet won Oscars for Best Cinematography and Costume Design, and both Hussey and Whiting received Golden Globes for their performances.

The case stirred debate when a judge dismissed it in May 2023, citing First Amendment protections and labeling the allegations a “gross mischaracterization” of the scenes.

Hussey’s passing marks the end of a remarkable life filled with artistry, family, and compassion. In an emotional statement, her family reflected on her warmth, wisdom, and kindness, highlighting her enduring legacy:

"Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. Born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Olivia lived a life full of passion, love, and dedication to the arts, spirituality, and kindness toward animals."

Hussey Eisley is survived by her three children—Alex, Max, and India—her husband of 35 years, David Glen Eisley, and her grandson, Greyson. As the family mourns their loss, they celebrate her profound impact on their lives and the industry, asking for privacy during this difficult time.

The legacy of Olivia Hussey Eisley, from her groundbreaking role as Juliet to her kindness and creativity, will continue to inspire generations to come.
