Tensions flared at the United Nations on Monday as accusations flew between Russia and Western nations regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a heated exchange, Russia pointed fingers at the West for allegedly sabotaging agreements that could have averted war, while the U.S. and its allies squarely blamed Moscow, insisting that Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind the invasion.
The dispute revolved around the failure to implement the 2015 Minsk agreements, which were designed to resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists in the Donbas region. Russia's UN Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, attributed the breakdown of these agreements to what he termed as "Kyiv's sabotage" supported by Western powers.
At the Security Council meeting, called by Russia on the anniversary of the Minsk peace plan, Nebenzia dismissed accusations from Ukraine and Western nations, branding them as "absolutely baseless." He argued that had the Minsk agreements been upheld, the tragic events unfolding in Ukraine could have been averted, laying blame on the U.S. and its allies for their alleged geopolitical motives.
In response, U.S. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood denounced Russia's claims as "myths and disinformation," asserting that Moscow initiated and perpetuated the violence in Ukraine. Wood accused Russia of disregarding its commitments under the Minsk agreements and painted Ukraine as merely defending itself against aggression.
Adding to the chorus of condemnation, Britain's Deputy UN Ambassador James Kariuki condemned Russia's invasion as "unprovoked, unnecessary, and illegal." He criticized Russia for attempting to distort history and urged the nation to withdraw from Ukraine, emphasizing the United Kingdom's unwavering support for Ukraine against Russian aggression.
The exchange underscored the deep-seated divisions and divergent narratives surrounding the conflict in Ukraine, with both sides vehemently defending their positions. As tensions continue to escalate, the international community remains on edge, grappling with the repercussions of Russia's actions and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
