In a devastating assault on Monday, Russian missiles wreaked havoc across Ukraine, targeting cities with a barrage that left the nation reeling. Among the hardest hit was Kyiv, where the onslaught disrupted critical medical procedures and inflicted significant damage, including on the largest children's hospital in the country. The attack claimed the lives of at least 31 people and injured over 150 others.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on social media that the daytime barrage struck five Ukrainian cities with over 40 missiles of various types. Despite Ukraine's air force intercepting 30 missiles, the strikes caused widespread destruction and loss of life. Kyiv, in particular, endured its most intense bombardment in nearly four months, affecting seven out of its ten districts. The capital city alone witnessed seven fatalities, including hospital staff, while strikes in Kryvyi Rih resulted in ten deaths.

The Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv bore the brunt of the assault, with debris falling into open chests of heart surgery patients and forcing cancer patients out into parks and streets for treatment. The scene was described as chaotic, with rescuers and volunteers urgently clearing rubble and searching for survivors amidst the devastation.

"This should not be happening," President Zelenskyy emphasized, urging global attention to Russia's actions and condemning the attack as a stark reminder of the brutality faced by Ukraine.

In response to the crisis, Ukraine's Security Service identified wreckage from a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile at the site of the hospital, prompting the initiation of war crime charges. The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, described the missile strikes as particularly shocking, calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address the escalating situation.

The International Criminal Court has previously issued arrest warrants for top Russian military officials for attacks on civilian infrastructure, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. As the conflict enters its third year, Russian forces continue to deny targeting civilian areas, despite mounting evidence suggesting otherwise.

The aftermath of Monday's assault saw widespread damage to medical facilities and residential buildings, leaving thousands without essential services like power and water. Ukrainian authorities and international observers alike have condemned the attacks, urging concerted global action to halt further escalations and protect civilians caught in the crossfire.
