Samsung initiated the deployment of its significant One UI 6.1 update last week, extending its reach beyond the initial launch with the Galaxy S24 series in January. The update, which introduced various AI and Generative AI capabilities, is now making its way to older models such as the Galaxy S23 lineup and Galaxy Z Fold 5. Notably, this latest update reintroduces a feature aimed at preserving OLED screens, a functionality notably absent in the previous One UI 6 iteration but present in the earlier One UI 5 version.
The burn-in protection feature, identified by Persian publication Toranji, has been reinstated in the latest One UI 6.1 update. Following installation, eligible devices including the Galaxy S23 Ultra now benefit from burn-in protection for the status bar. This feature actively shifts the icons within the status bar by a few pixels at regular intervals, as observed in a report showcasing a GIF demonstrating the functionality. Through this subtle movement, the aim is to mitigate screen burn-in issues commonly associated with OLED displays, a feature that was notably lacking in One UI 6.
The One UI 6.1 update is gradually rolling out worldwide, reaching users of last year's Galaxy S23 series, including the Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, and S23 FE, along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphones. Additionally, the Galaxy Tab S9 series is also slated to receive the update. The majority of users can anticipate receiving the update by April.
Initially unveiled alongside the Galaxy S24 series in January, Samsung's One UI 6.1 brings forth a suite of AI-powered features under the Galaxy AI experience umbrella. Notable additions include Live Translate, Chat Assist, Note Assist, and Circle to Search, offering users enhanced functionality and convenience.
