The highly anticipated horror sequel Saw XI is facing unexpected delays. Initially set for a September 2024 release, the film has been pushed back a year, with no clear progress on its development. Behind-the-scenes conflicts between producers and Lionsgate appear to be the main reason for the holdup.
Production Standoff Delays Saw XI
Despite the success of Saw X, which earned $112 million globally, the next installment remains in limbo. Writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan submitted a draft script in spring 2024, but the project has been at a standstill since May.
"We haven’t heard anything since May," Melton revealed. "It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative side. There are higher-level issues at play."
While Kevin Greutert, director of Saw X, was initially attached to direct Saw XI, his current involvement remains uncertain. Lionsgate has yet to comment on whether he is still on board.
A Timely Story Left in Limbo
Melton is confident in the script’s potential, describing it as timely and socially relevant. While plot details remain under wraps, he compares the film’s themes to Saw VI, which targeted health insurance executives and resonated with audiences frustrated by the system.
"Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story," Melton shared. "It taps into the same themes as Saw VI, where people feel powerless, and John Kramer steps in."
The real-life murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson earlier this year has brought renewed attention to the issues explored in Saw VI. Interestingly, Melton revealed that he attended the University of Iowa with Thompson, although they were not close.

Lionsgate and Producers at Odds
The primary roadblock for Saw XI appears to be disagreements between Lionsgate and the film’s producers.
"There’s internal squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can’t quite get on the same page," Melton explained.
The uncertainty has cast doubt on whether Saw XI will move forward. While Melton and Dunstan remain hopeful, the future of the franchise hangs in the balance.
A Franchise Fighting to Survive
The Saw franchise has had its ups and downs. Saw VI, despite strong critical reception, struggled at the box office due to the success of Paranormal Activity. Longtime franchise producer Mark Burg noted the similarities between Saw VI and John Q, a 2002 film about a father fighting for his son’s healthcare.
"Jigsaw goes after someone who won’t provide insurance for him," Burg reflected. "So I guess I’m two for two."
With a passionate fanbase eagerly awaiting the next chapter, the Saw XI delay is disappointing. Whether the studio and producers can resolve their differences remains to be seen. Until then, the fate of Jigsaw’s next game is uncertain.
