In a swift turn of events, Manchester United has shifted the narrative from being a club in crisis to standing just three points off the top in both English and European competitions. Erik ten Hag, the team's manager, understands the ever-changing storylines surrounding his team. From a disappointing display against Newcastle United to a spectacular 2-1 victory over Chelsea, United's unpredictability remains their defining characteristic post-Sir Alex Ferguson's era.

Ten Hag's efforts to instill discipline off the field contrast sharply with the team's erratic performances on the pitch. The inconsistency of this United squad is apparent – there's no guaranteed standard of play. Yet, on occasions like the recent win against Chelsea, they showcase brilliance that speaks volumes about the team's potential under Ten Hag's guidance.

The victory against Chelsea wasn't a display of United's control over the game; instead, they weathered a storm, often defending deep in their own territory. The midfield's composition raised eyebrows, lacking a progressive playmaker and featuring players like Scott McTominay, whose performance defied conventional midfield norms. Despite unconventional play, McTominay's striker-like instincts secured crucial goals, although his finishing left some opportunities unexploited.

United's missed chances, highlighted by Bruno Fernandes' penalty blunder, showcased their inefficiency in converting opportunities into goals. While Fernandes redeemed himself with an industrious performance, the team struggled to capitalize on numerous opportunities.

On the flip side, Chelsea's inability to capitalize on their chances compounded their woes. The disjointedness in their play and the struggles of certain players, notably Mykhailo Mudryk, stood out starkly against United's resolute performance.

Though United might not sustain their current proximity to the top teams throughout the season, their recent victory highlighted the team's indomitable spirit and energy. Marcus Rashford's tenacity, a contrast to his previous lackluster showing, epitomized the raw intensity United occasionally brings to the field.

While harnessing this unpredictable energy might not ensure a title challenge, it guarantees excitement. United's display against Chelsea was a testament to their ability to surprise and entertain when least expected, providing a much-needed morale boost for Ten Hag and the team.

Ultimately, Manchester United's Wednesday performance, while not a blueprint for consistent success, offered a glimpse of their potential under Ten Hag's management, showing that when the stars align, they can deliver exhilarating football.
