Selena Gomez has returned with a heartfelt new single, “In the Dark,” a song that celebrates love’s quiet strength and unwavering support. The track, featured on the Nobody Wants This season 2 soundtrack, was released just weeks after Gomez’s wedding to producer Benny Blanco — and it’s already resonating deeply with fans.
The song dropped alongside a sultry, minimalist music video that complements its emotional core. While many assumed the track was written for the Netflix series, Gomez later revealed that “In the Dark” had a long history. It was originally crafted for an unreleased album from her 2010s era, a project her fans once called Seven Heavens. That material eventually evolved into her 2020 album Rare.
“This is just a little nostalgia droplet,” Gomez wrote on social media, announcing the song’s release. “I hope you love it.”
A Song About Love That Endures Darkness
Lyrically, “In the Dark” is Gomez at her most vulnerable. The song paints an intimate portrait of standing beside a loved one during their lowest moments.
In the pre-chorus, she promises unconditional support:
“I’ll be there when you lose yourself / To remind you of who you are / You’re so beautiful in the dark.”
Later, in the bridge, she gently urges her partner to open up, singing:
“Show me the way that your heart breaks / Let me inside, baby, I won’t run.”
The lyrics echo Gomez’s long-standing themes of empathy, resilience, and emotional honesty. While the artist hasn’t said who inspired the track, many listeners believe it reflects her own journey — one shaped by love, pain, and personal healing.
Music Mirrors Her Mental Health Journey
Gomez has been candid about her mental health struggles over the years. In 2020, she revealed her bipolar diagnosis and later discussed her 2018 psychotic episode, admitting that it was one of the darkest times of her life.
“I’ve been to four treatment centers,” she shared in a 2022 interview. “When I was in my early twenties, I felt like I couldn’t control my emotions. It was really dark.”
She credited her friends and family for helping her through it, calling their love her “lifeline.” In her documentary My Mind & Me, she opened up further, describing how her family’s compassion pulled her back from despair.
Today, Gomez channels that same compassion into advocacy. Through her Rare Impact Fund, she supports mental health initiatives for young people. She’s also spoken openly about using her platform to destigmatize mental health challenges.
“When I decided to be open about my story, it was terrifying,” she told Billboard earlier this year. “But I knew it could help someone else — and that’s worth it.”
Love, Light, and Healing in Every Note
“In the Dark” feels like a reflection of that journey — not just romantic devotion, but love that endures through struggle and uncertainty. Gomez’s voice, raw and unfiltered, carries the song’s message: that even in the darkest moments, love can be the light that brings you home.
