Tensions rose in Los Angeles after federal agents handcuffed Democratic Senator Alex Padilla during a press briefing led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
The incident happened while Noem was updating the media on immigration enforcement. Senator Padilla interrupted her remarks, loudly asking a question. Officers quickly removed him from the room.
Shocking Scene Unfolds
Video shows Padilla telling officers, “I’m Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary!” Despite identifying himself, officials forced him out and handcuffed him.
His office confirmed he was "forced to the ground and handcuffed" but not detained afterward.
Reactions From Both Parties
The arrest sparked outrage. Fellow senators called it shocking. Others called it a disgrace.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Padilla took part in “disrespectful political theatre.” They also claimed he didn’t wear a senator’s pin or clearly identify himself.
According to the DHS, Secretary Noem spoke with Padilla after the event.
Padilla Explains His Side
Padilla said he was in the federal building for a scheduled meeting. He joined the press conference hoping to hear updates and ask questions about immigration raids.
He said DHS gave “little to no information” on previous queries from lawmakers.
As the top Democrat on the Senate’s Border Security and Immigration subcommittee, Padilla said he had a right to seek answers.
Concerns About Broader Treatment
Padilla warned the public about what this means for everyday people.
“If they treat a senator like this, imagine what they do to cooks, day laborers, or farm workers in our communities,” he said.
He urged Americans to keep protesting peacefully against the Trump administration’s actions.
Local Leaders React
LA Mayor Karen Bass called the event “absolutely abhorrent.” She said it reflects the administration’s ongoing attacks on Los Angeles.
Governor Gavin Newsom demanded Republican leaders condemn the act.
“If they can handcuff a senator for asking a question, imagine what they’ll do to you,” he wrote on social media.
White House Responds
The White House defended the arrest. They said Padilla stormed the room, yelled, and lunged toward Secretary Noem.
“Padilla didn’t want answers; he wanted attention,” said Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson.
She said Padilla embarrassed himself and tried to turn the moment into a political show.
Kamala Harris Joins the Debate
Former Vice President Kamala Harris also weighed in.
She said Padilla was “trying to get answers for Californians” and slammed the government’s response.
“This is a shameful and stunning abuse of power,” she wrote.
