The Calgary Flames pulled off an electrifying comeback Monday night, rallying from a two-goal deficit to stun the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in a shootout. Yegor Sharangovich played the hero, scoring the lone shootout goal to snap Calgary’s seven-game losing streak against Colorado.
Late Surge Fuels Flames' Comeback
Trailing 2-0 in the third period, the Flames ignited a dramatic turnaround. Ryan Lomberg struck first, cutting the deficit in half, and just 32 seconds later, Adam Klapka netted the equalizer. With momentum on their side, Calgary held strong to force overtime.
Goaltender Dan Vladar was instrumental in the victory, stopping 28 shots in regulation and all three attempts in the shootout. His performance helped the Flames keep their fading playoff hopes alive—they now sit just five points behind a wild-card spot with nine games left in the regular season.
Avalanche Stumble at Home
Colorado’s Cale Makar and Logan O’Connor gave their team an early 2-0 lead, but they couldn’t fend off Calgary’s late push. The loss marked the Avalanche’s second consecutive home defeat, following a 2-1 setback against St. Louis on Saturday. Before that, Colorado had been dominant at home, boasting an 11-game winning streak.
Despite the defeat, Nathan MacKinnon extended his home point streak to 25 games, assisting on Makar’s first-period goal. Goalie Scott Wedgewood made 25 saves but couldn’t secure the win for Colorado.
Defining Moments
The Flames’ resilience was on full display early in the third period when they successfully killed a roughing penalty against Blake Coleman. Keeping the deficit at two allowed them to mount their eventual comeback.
Meanwhile, Makar’s 28th goal of the season put him on the brink of NHL history. He needs just two more to become the first defenseman to hit 30 goals in a season since Mike Green achieved the feat in 2008-09. Only eight defensemen in league history have reached the 30-goal mark, including legends like Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, and Ray Bourque.
