The San Jose Sharks continued their dramatic roster overhaul by trading defenceman Jake Walman to the Edmonton Oilers. In return, they received a conditional first-round pick in 2026 and forward Carl Berglund. The deal, widely speculated earlier in the day, was finalized late Thursday, shortly after the Sharks’ 7-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.
Trade Details and Conditions
Edmonton's first-round pick in 2026 comes with protections—if it falls within the top 12, the Oilers can defer the selection to 2027. However, if they trade their 2027 first-round pick before the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, San Jose will receive the 2026 pick unconditionally.
Carl Berglund, a 25-year-old Swedish centre, has spent most of his career in the minor leagues. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 207 pounds, he has recorded 12 points in 45 games this season.
Walman’s Departure Leaves a Gap
Walman, 29, was on the ice for the Sharks’ morning skate in Denver before being informed of the trade. A key player in San Jose’s defence, he led the team with 32 points in 50 games and averaged over 23 minutes of ice time per game. His departure signals a major shift for the franchise as they continue to rebuild.
Acquired last June from Detroit, Walman arrived in San Jose as part of a salary cap move by the Red Wings. His three-year, $10.2 million contract, signed in February 2023, made him a valuable asset for trade discussions.
More Moves on the Horizon?
San Jose has been actively reshaping its roster throughout the season. Before this trade, they had already sent goaltender Vitek Vanecek and centre Nico Sturm to the Florida Panthers. Earlier deals included moving Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci to Dallas, as well as trading goalie Mackenzie Blackwood to Colorado.
Defenceman Mario Ferraro’s name has also surfaced in trade rumours. When asked about the speculation, Ferraro remained focused on his game, stating, “My job is here. I’m just playing and staying focused on tonight’s game.”
What’s Next for the Sharks?
With the NHL trade deadline looming, more moves could be on the way for San Jose. The team appears committed to a long-term rebuild, clearing cap space and acquiring draft picks to shape its future. Fans will be watching closely as the Sharks continue to revamp their lineup.
