Over the weekend, a spring storm soaked the San Francisco Bay area and shut down highways in Northern California mountains, also marking a record for single-day snowfall in the Sierra Nevada. Despite the storm moving out by Sunday, officials cautioned about slick roads due to up to two feet of snow in some Sierra areas.
The University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab noted the unusual timing of the snowiest day for the 2023/2024 season. Treacherous driving conditions led to the closure of multiple highways near Lake Tahoe, including Interstate 80. Flood advisories were issued for parts of the Bay Area, with heavy rain and temperatures dropping to the low 40s. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph were recorded near San Francisco. Southern California experienced light rain and gusty winds from the storm. Drier and warmer weather was anticipated for the week ahead.
