Paris – Simone Biles experienced a surprising defeat in the floor exercise final at the Paris Olympics on Monday, leading to Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade clinching the gold medal. Biles had to be content with a silver, while her fellow American, Jordan Chiles, took home the bronze.
Biles entered the final as the favourite due to the high difficulty of her routine. However, she made two significant mistakes, stepping out of bounds twice on her four tumbling passes. These errors resulted in deductions that cost her the gold medal. Andrade's routine, though less challenging, was nearly perfect and earned her a score of 14.166, just enough to surpass Biles’ 14.133.

The competition started well for Biles as she successfully executed her triple-twisting double back, but things went awry when she landed out of bounds on her next pass. The same mistake happened on her final pass, leading to a deduction of six-tenths of a point. Biles anxiously awaited her score, and when it appeared, she saw herself in second place, just 0.033 points behind Andrade.

This event marked a disappointing end for Biles in the artistic gymnastics program at the Paris Olympics. She also finished fifth in the balance beam final after slipping off the apparatus. Despite these setbacks, Biles' performance in Paris has been remarkable. She led the U.S. team to victory in the team title and secured gold in the all-around and vault events.

Biles' return to the Olympics is notable, considering she withdrew from the Tokyo Games three years ago due to a mental block known as the “twisties,” which causes a loss of spatial awareness. Her withdrawal then raised concerns about her future in gymnastics, leading her to take a two-year break from the sport.

Now at 27, Biles has made a triumphant comeback, showing she is still a dominant force in gymnastics. She has hinted at the possibility of competing in the Los Angeles Games in 2028, leaving fans hopeful for her continued presence in the sport.
