Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller Sinners has shaken up Hollywood norms. With a strong $45.6 million debut, it outshined even franchise giants, proving original films can still lead the charge.

Sinners Rises: A Bloody Gamble That Paid Off

Directed, written, and produced by Coogler, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in a daring double role. Set in 1932 Mississippi, the film blends vampire lore with bootlegging drama, creating a fresh and thrilling experience.

With a $90 million budget, the risk was high. But the payoff? A box office winner.

Warner Bros. Strikes Gold – Twice

Warner Bros. ruled Easter weekend with a one-two punch. Alongside Sinners, A Minecraft Movie brought in $41.3 million in its third week. Together, the two films gave the studio a whopping 64% of domestic ticket sales.

The Minecraft film has now crossed $720 million globally — but all eyes were on Sinners.

Sinners' Sweet Deal: Coogler Gets Creative Control and More

To bring Coogler on board, Warner Bros. offered an extraordinary deal — part of the film’s gross and full ownership after 25 years. It’s an industry rarity that signals deep faith in his vision. The Coogler-Jordan duo, known for Fruitvale Station and Creed, delivered yet again.

Critics Rave, Fans Cheer for Sinners

Sinners wowed both critics and viewers. It boasts a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score and earned an “A” CinemaScore. Strong word of mouth is expected to carry it through the coming weeks.

The audience was notably diverse: 38% Black, 35% white, 18% Hispanic, and 5% Asian — a wide appeal that fueled success.

Overseas Bite for Sinners Slightly Softer

Internationally, Sinners saw modest returns, earning $15.4 million across 71 markets. But its domestic firepower could lead to sustained global growth.

From Box Office Flops to a Sinners Comeback

Warner Bros. had stumbled with past dual-role films like The Alto Knights and Mickey 17. But Sinners flips the script, proving that with the right story and team, originality sells.

Ryan Coogler now joins elite company with directors like Jordan Peele, whose Nope had a $44.3 million debut in 2022.

Beyond Sinners: Other Weekend Standouts

Angel Studios’ The King of Kings continued to shine during Easter, collecting $17.2 million in its second week. Its total now sits at $45.3 million — nearly matching Sinners.

Meanwhile, The Wedding Banquet, a modern retelling of Ang Lee’s 1993 classic, earned $922,906. The indie hit stars Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, and Han Gi-chan.
