An Oshawa man faces a second-degree murder charge after police say he killed his 80-year-old father outside a local mosque last week.

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) said the incident happened on October 16 near Mcgrigor Street and Simcoe Street South, close to the Islamic Centre of Oshawa.

Police were called to a nearby home around 4:20 p.m. for reports of unknown trouble. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from severe injuries. Despite emergency efforts, the victim died at the scene shortly after.

The victim has been identified as Ibrahim Bala, 80, a respected community member known for his kindness and devotion to his faith. His death marks Durham Region’s seventh homicide of the year.

Community in Mourning

Investigators believe Bala left the Islamic Centre around 2:30 p.m. and was attacked shortly after, sometime before 2:40 p.m.

Members of the mosque and the wider Muslim community expressed deep grief over his death. In a statement, the Islamic Centre of Oshawa called Bala a “very dear community brother,” saying they were “heartbroken by this tragic loss.”

The National Council of Canadian Muslims also paid tribute, describing him as a “prominent Muslim community member.”

On Monday, the Islamic Centre issued another statement after learning of the arrest, thanking the community for its compassion and support. “We truly appreciate the outpouring of kindness during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The centre also addressed the broader issue of mental health, urging families to seek help when needed. “Mental health does not discriminate by faith, age, or background,” it said. “We strongly encourage families to access available resources so tragedies like this never happen again.”

Arrest Made After Police Investigation

After several days of investigation, officers located the suspect on October 20 at a residence near Thornton Road North and Adelaide Avenue West in Oshawa.

Police arrested Sohaib Bala, 42, without incident. He now faces a charge of second-degree murder and remains in custody pending a bail hearing. Authorities confirmed that he is the victim’s son.

The cause of death has not been released, but police described the injuries as “traumatic.” Investigators have not shared details about what led to the killing or what may have motivated it.

Detectives from the Homicide Unit continue to gather evidence and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be shared directly with Detective Barrette at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5400, or through Crime Stoppers anonymously.

A City Reflects

The tragedy has shaken the Oshawa community. City councillors said there is “a lot of grief” and called for compassion as residents come to terms with the loss.

As one mosque member said quietly outside the prayer hall, “Brother Ibrahim was gentle and kind. Everyone knew him. We can’t believe he’s gone.”
