South African police gather at the scene of a mass shooting where gunmen killed nine and injured at least 10 in a pub in Bekkersdal, South Africa, Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025.
Nine people were killed and at least ten others injured after multiple gunmen opened fire at a pub in South Africa early Sunday. The deadly South Africa pub shooting unfolded in Bekkersdal, a township west of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves through the community and reigniting concerns over gun violence.
Deadly Attack Before Dawn
The shooting occurred just before 1 a.m. at KwaNoxolo Tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal. The area lies about 46 kilometers west of Johannesburg.
According to police, the attackers arrived suddenly and began firing at patrons inside the pub. Panic spread instantly as people tried to flee for safety.
Gunmen Flee While Firing
Authorities said around 12 unidentified suspects carried out the attack. The group arrived in a white minibus and a silver sedan.
The gunmen continued shooting randomly while escaping the scene. Some victims were struck outside the tavern and in nearby streets.
Police described the violence as indiscriminate and brutal. Several people collapsed where they were shot.
Weapons Used in the Shooting
Maj. Gen. Fred Kekana, Gauteng’s acting provincial commissioner, confirmed the suspects were heavily armed.
Police recovered evidence suggesting the use of one AK-47 rifle and several 9-millimeter pistols. Some attackers reportedly wore balaclavas, making identification difficult.
Innocent Bystanders Caught in Crossfire
Police have not released full details about the victims. However, officials confirmed that an e-hailing driver was among those killed.
The driver had just dropped off a passenger near the tavern. He was fatally shot while still inside his vehicle, police said.
Ten injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals. Several remain in serious condition.
Motive Remains Unclear
Investigators have not established a motive for the Bekkersdal pub shooting. Police said the attack does not appear to be random but declined to speculate further.
A manhunt is now underway. Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations are working alongside the Crime Detection Tracing Unit to locate the suspects.
Second Mass Shooting in Weeks
This incident marks the second mass shooting in South Africa within three weeks. Authorities say the frequency of such attacks is deeply alarming.
Earlier this month, gunmen killed at least 12 people at an unlicensed bar near the capital. Thirteen others were injured in that attack.
In 2022, a separate mass shooting in Soweto claimed 16 lives. Another bar shooting that same day killed four people in a different province.
Political Pressure Mounts
The Democratic Alliance, South Africa’s second-largest political party, called for urgent action.
The party demanded a special task force to investigate recent shootings in Gauteng province. Leaders warned that violence in social venues is becoming normalized.
Bekkersdal’s Ongoing Struggles
Bekkersdal is surrounded by abandoned mine shafts and is known for illegal mining activities. These operations have fueled crime, gang activity, and illegal firearms circulation.
Community leaders say unemployment and poverty continue to worsen social instability in the area.
Gun Violence Crisis in South Africa
South Africa recorded nearly 26,000 homicides in 2024, averaging more than 70 deaths per day. The country has one of the world’s highest murder rates.
Firearms remain the leading cause of homicide deaths. Despite strict gun laws, officials say illegal weapons are widely used in violent crimes.
Calls for Stronger Enforcement
As investigations continue, residents are demanding stronger policing and better firearm control enforcement.
For families of the victims, answers and justice cannot come soon enough. The South Africa pub shooting has once again exposed the nation’s ongoing battle with gun violence.
