Calgary Stampeders Dedrick Mills TD against the Edmonton Elks defence in second half CFL action at McMahon stadium in Calgary on Monday, September 1, 2025.
The Calgary Stampeders closed out OK Tire Labour Day Weekend with a statement victory over the Edmonton Elks. Erik Brooks stole the spotlight with an 86-yard punt return touchdown, powering Calgary to a commanding 28-7 win at McMahon Stadium on Monday.
This victory lifted the Stampeders to an 8-3 record, keeping them firmly in the West Division race.
Brooks’ Stunning Punt Return Sparks Momentum
The game’s turning point came in the third quarter when Erik Brooks sprinted 86 yards for his first career punt return touchdown. His explosive run broke a defensive deadlock and ignited the Calgary crowd. The score extended Calgary’s lead to 20-7, swinging momentum completely in their favour.
Adams Jr. Leads the Offence with Precision
Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. showcased his mobility and sharp passing to set the tone early. In the first quarter, he engineered a nine-play, 79-yard drive capped by a deep strike to Dominique Rhymes for the opening touchdown.
Adams Jr. also set up a crucial first-and-goal in the fourth quarter with three straight completions. Quincy Vaughn then finished the drive with a quarterback sneak, stretching Calgary’s lead to 28-7 after a successful two-point conversion.
Dedrick Mills Powers the Ground Game
Running back Dedrick Mills once again proved reliable. He surpassed 100 rushing yards for the second time in 2025, giving Calgary balance on offence. Mills also converted the two-point attempt in the fourth quarter, sealing the win.
His consistent runs helped control the tempo and kept Edmonton’s defence under pressure.
Calgary’s Defence Shuts Down the Elks
The Stampeders’ defence played a crucial role in limiting Edmonton’s chances. Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo threw for 255 yards but failed to score a touchdown or interception. Calgary defenders consistently disrupted drives, including a key fumble recovery by Godfrey Onyeka in the second quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter, Edmonton’s last hope ended when Fajardo was strip-sacked on third-and-goal. The turnover sealed Calgary’s victory.
Elks Struggle to Capitalize on Opportunities
The Elks had chances but failed to finish drives. Running back Justin Rankin sparked some early momentum, contributing with both rushes and receptions. However, Edmonton had to settle for field goals, including a 52-yarder by Vincent Blanchard in the third quarter.
Missed opportunities proved costly. Blanchard’s 32-yard miss in the second quarter left points off the board, and costly penalties extended Calgary possessions.
Stampeders Stay Strong in West Division
With this win, the Calgary Stampeders improved to 8-3, staying close behind the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West Division. The Elks, meanwhile, dropped to 4-7, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy.
What’s Next
The Labour Day rivalry isn’t over yet. Both teams will clash again in Week 14 on Saturday, September 6, at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. The Elks will look for revenge, while Calgary aims to extend its winning streak.
