A low-pressure system over Hudson's Bay is causing significant wind disturbances across Ontario this week. Strong winds of up to 80 km/h are expected to sweep through the province, creating challenging conditions. According to Peter Kimbell, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, the system is responsible for the intense wind activity. "We have a windy day today due to the deep, low-pressure system over Hudson Bay," Kimbell explained, adding that these winds are impacting much of Ontario.

In particular, wind warnings have been issued for areas around Niagara and Hamilton, especially near Lake Erie. "The same applies to areas east of Lake Ontario, including Prince Edward County and Kingston, where very strong winds are anticipated," Kimbell noted. While places like Toronto are experiencing sunny weather, the winds remain a major concern for other parts of the province.

Along with the winds, flurries and blowing snow are expected to follow in the wake of a sharp cold front moving through Ontario. "Ahead of that cold front, we’re seeing flurries and strong winds causing blowing snow, especially east of areas around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay," Kimbell said. Heavy snow squalls are anticipated in these regions, with many areas facing blizzard-like conditions.

Conditions along Highway 400, near Parry Sound, are expected to become particularly dangerous later today and overnight. "It wouldn’t be surprising if the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) had to close parts of Highway 400 due to the weather," Kimbell warned. The blizzard conditions are most severe east of Georgian Bay, and a snowsquall warning is in effect east of Lake Huron.

As the storm system continues to move through Ontario, the snow will persist into Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, impacting roadways and making travel hazardous. "The snow will continue into Wednesday, and it will hit seasonal temperatures by Thursday and Friday," Kimbell said. However, he emphasized that while snow will remain in the forecast, the primary concern this week is the high winds and the blizzard conditions around Georgian Bay tonight.

Kimbell was also asked whether the ongoing snowfall could be attributed to the influence of La Niña, a weather phenomenon that sometimes impacts global climates. "The impact of La Niña on Ontario’s weather is minimal at best. It’s hard to directly link this snowfall to La Niña, as there is a lot of variability in the weather patterns," Kimbell explained.

Overall, Ontario residents should prepare for a week of intense weather, with strong winds, snow squalls, and blizzard conditions making travel treacherous. Highway closures and difficult driving conditions are expected, especially in regions near Georgian Bay and along the Highway 400 corridor.
