This summer, viewers of a popular dating show couldn't ignore something unusual—many of the cast had extremely full, shiny lips. The look didn’t impress everyone. Instead of watching the drama unfold, people online talked more about the lip fillers and botox.
Dr. Julia Carroll, a skin expert from Toronto, also noticed the extreme look while watching the show with her daughter. She believes even some of the male contestants had cosmetic work done. "It was honestly shocking," she said.
Social media users posted memes and comments, questioning if these looks reflect today’s beauty standards. For Carroll, that level of filler is too much. “If someone leaves my office and their friends say, ‘Did you do something to your face?’ then I’ve failed,” she said.
The Shift to a Softer Look
Big, bold lips are losing popularity. More people now want a “baby filler” look. This method adds just a little volume and shape. It gives a natural, fresh feel without making it obvious.
Carroll says most patients want to look slightly younger and more polished. They don’t want to look like they’ve had anything done.
She also explained that many people misunderstand what filler does. “I hate the word ‘filler’ because it sounds like we’re just stuffing faces,” she said. In reality, fillers should shape, define, and balance the face.
Technique Matters
Carroll uses a product called Juvederm Volbella for lips. She likes it because it gives a smooth, glossy look and keeps the lips soft and natural. It also helps reduce fine lines.
The problem, she says, is often poor technique. Big lips seen on social media usually come from using the wrong product, in the wrong place, and with the wrong amount.
“It’s not just about big lips,” she explained. “It has to suit your whole face—your nose, chin, and cheeks. It’s about balance.”
What Celebs Are Really Doing
Last year, many stars said they were removing their fillers. Carroll believes that’s only half true. She says most were just fixing areas that looked overdone. Dissolving filler isn't exact, she added. It’s hard to remove just a little without taking it all out.
Tips for Your First Filler Visit
1. Pick the right expert:
Carroll says to avoid clinics where everyone looks overdone. Choose someone who listens and personalizes your treatment.
2. Don’t bring celebrity photos:
She wants to see your face, not someone else's. A better idea is to bring a picture of your younger self if you want to restore volume.
3. Know what you want:
Do you want more shape? Better balance? A soft, hydrated look? Knowing your goals helps the expert pick the right method.
4. Trust your expert:
Sometimes patients ask for more when they don’t need it. Carroll reminds them they already look great. “A good injector will stop you before it goes too far,” she says.
