Sunita Williams Celebrates Thanksgiving 2024: ISS Crew Enjoys Festive Meal (Photo: NASA)

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and gratitude, and even when miles away from loved ones, the spirit of the holiday remains strong. This year, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams joined her colleagues aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to share a heartfelt Thanksgiving message from orbit.
In a video message, Williams expressed her warm wishes to those on Earth. “Our crew up here just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends and family who are down on Earth and everyone who is supporting us,” she said, reflecting the camaraderie and gratitude felt by the crew in space.

The crew made the holiday special with a unique space-inspired feast. Their Thanksgiving menu included staples like brussels sprouts, butternut squash, apples, sardines, and smoked turkey. However, these weren’t served as they would be on Earth. To adapt to the challenges of zero gravity, the food was processed into paste-like forms and stored in tubes. This preparation method ensures the food maintains its flavors while remaining safe and practical for space consumption.

Astronaut Barry Wilmore also shared his enthusiasm about the experience of celebrating in microgravity. “There are not many places that you can be that you can actually lay on the ceiling, and this is one of them. We’re thankful for zero gravity; it’s fantastic!” he said, adding a lighthearted note to the holiday.

Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore have been aboard the ISS since June 5. Their extended stay stems from delays in the Boeing Starliner spacecraft that was originally scheduled to bring them back to Earth in mid-June. Due to technical issues with the spacecraft, the astronauts’ return has been rescheduled. They are now set to travel back in SpaceX’s Dragon capsule as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission, with their return planned for February 2025.

While being away from Earth and their loved ones poses challenges, the crew members continue to demonstrate resilience and adaptability. Their celebration of Thanksgiving in space highlights the spirit of innovation and togetherness, reminding everyone that gratitude knows no boundaries—even the vastness of space.
