The Man of Steel is back on the big screen. Superman is flying back into theatres this July, and the first reactions are already rolling in.

After Monday night’s Los Angeles premiere, early viewers hit social media to share their thoughts—and so far, most of them are feeling pretty hopeful.

A New Superman for a New DC

This isn’t just another superhero reboot. Superman marks the beginning of DC Studios’ fresh start under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Expectations were sky-high—and thankfully, the early buzz is mostly good.

Fandango’s Erik Davis called it “a terrific start for the new DC Studios.” Collider’s Perri Nemiroff praised the movie’s mix of action, humour, and heart. Others described it as fun, full of hope, and a big step in the right direction for DC.

David Corenswet Wins Fans Over

David Corenswet’s take on Clark Kent is already winning fans. He’s been called kind, sincere, and exactly the type of Superman people want right now. His chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane, is getting lots of love too—described as “off the charts” by more than one early viewer.

Krypto the Superdog Steals the Show

Surprise scene-stealer? Krypto, Superman’s loyal superdog. A few critics said he’s the best part of the movie, bringing charm and comic relief without trying too hard. One even joked they’d rather watch a full movie about him.

Not Everyone's Sold

But the movie’s not without its critics. Some felt the plot was a bit too messy or leaned too heavily on style. A few thought Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, didn’t feel threatening enough—more annoying than evil, one said.

Still, even those with mixed feelings praised the performances and the movie’s hopeful tone. One critic summed it up as, “Not perfect, but made me believe in Superman again.”

What James Gunn Had in Mind

Director James Gunn has said this isn’t just a superhero story—it’s about values. He wanted a Superman that reflects kindness, decency, and moral strength. “People are looking for heroes right now,” Gunn told reporters earlier this year. “Superman is that.”

He also described the film as a love letter to America—one that explores different views on morality, justice, and what it means to be good in today’s world.

What’s Next?

This is just the beginning for Gunn’s new DC Universe. Projects like Supergirl and Lanterns are already on the way. But for now, Superman is leading the charge—and based on early reactions, it might just have what it takes to bring DC back into fans’ good books.

The film hits theatres on July 11.
