Early 2000s style has made a full comeback. From low-rise jeans to movie spinoffs topping theatres, the Y2K wave is everywhere. Now, Taco Bell is adding to the trend by relaunching some of its most loved bites.
The chain announced on Thursday that it will bring back five fan favourites with its limited-run Decades Y2K Menu. The lineup launches nationwide on September 9, and it includes some of the most missed items from the 1990s and early 2000s.
What’s Returning
The special menu features a mix of classic meals and snacks that fans have demanded for years.
- Chili Cheese Burrito (1990) – A hearty wrap that became popular with its catchy commercials. First sold for just 89 cents, it returns for $2.99.
- 7-Layer Burrito (1993) – Stuffed with beans, rice, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. This vegetarian-friendly item disappeared in 2020 but makes a big comeback.
- Double Decker Taco (1995) – A crunchy taco wrapped in a soft tortilla with beans. Famous for its ad campaign featuring basketball star Shaquille O’Neal, this one became a true Y2K icon.
- Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco (2012) – Launched after the success of the Nacho Cheese version, this taco changed fast food. Fans voted for its return after its 2019 exit.
- Caramel Apple Empanada (2000s) – A warm, sweet dessert filled with caramel and apple. It briefly returned last year, but fans wanted more.
The Throwback Box
To celebrate, Taco Bell is also launching the Discovery Luxe Box for $9. The box includes a Crunchwrap, two tacos, chips, and a drink. It marks 20 years of the Crunchwrap, one of the chain’s most recognizable meals.
Why It’s Back
“These items represent some of the most-requested and beloved menu items from the nineties and early 2000s. Fan demand and continued online buzz helped determine the final five, and we’re excited to see how fans respond to these epic comebacks,” a Taco Bell spokesperson said.
The company explained that the first Decades Menu was a big success. Customers showed a strong connection to past items, which convinced the brand to expand the throwback collection. For older fans, it’s a trip down memory lane. For younger ones, it’s a chance to experience the flavour and energy of a different time.
Prices Then and Now
While no item matches the original low prices of the 1990s, Taco Bell has kept costs affordable. Most menu items fall under $3, which still feels close to the original price when adjusted for inflation.
A Nostalgic Feast
With the return of these long-missed favourites, Taco Bell is betting big on nostalgia. The Decades Y2K Menu promises both comfort and excitement, giving longtime fans and new customers plenty of reasons to head to the drive-thru this fall.
