December 26, 2023

This week witnessed significant developments in the tech sphere, marking pivotal moments for various companies and industries. Here are the noteworthy stories making headlines:

1. Instagram's Decline in Popularity:

Recent data from TRG Datacentres revealed a sharp decline in user engagement on Threads, with an 80% drop in daily active users since its peak earlier in the year. Surprisingly, Instagram emerged as the social media platform that users expressed the most desire to leave in 2023. Over a million global users sought information monthly on deleting their Instagram accounts, translating to approximately 12,500 searches per 100,000 individuals worldwide each month.

2. OpenAI's Ambitious Funding Plans:

OpenAI, the AI startup, is in talks to secure a substantial new funding round, aiming for a valuation of at least $100 billion, according to reports from Bloomberg. Additionally, discussions involve raising $8-10 billion for a chip venture in collaboration with Abu Dhabi's G42. This follows the imminent closure of an $86 billion tender offer scheduled for January.

3. Beeper Concedes Defeat in iMessage Integration Battle with Apple:

Messaging app startup Beeper has announced its decision to cease efforts to integrate iMessage following an extended tussle with Apple, citing the tech giant's overwhelming resources. Beeper will discontinue attempts to enable iMessage on Android if its latest workaround, which involves jailbroken iPhones, faces blockage. The company now shifts its focus towards creating the premier cross-platform chat application.

4. Leak Hints at Redmi Note 13 Pro Price:

Ahead of the imminent launch of Redmi's Note 13 series in India, leaked information indicates that the Redmi Note 13 Pro might be priced at Rs 32,999, as mentioned on its packaging. However, industry expectations suggest that the actual launch price in India could be lower than the printed maximum retail price.

5. Apple's Investment in AI Development Through News Publishers:

Reports suggest that Apple has initiated discussions with major news organizations, such as Condé Nast, NBC News, IAC, The Daily Beast, and Better Homes and Gardens, proposing multi-year deals worth over $50 million. These agreements would grant Apple access to articles from these publishers' archives for the purpose of training AI systems. Apple's move signifies a strategic effort to bolster its capabilities in generative AI technology, positioning itself competitively against its counterparts in the tech industry.

These developments underscore the dynamic landscape of the tech sector, where companies navigate competition, funding, and innovation in their pursuit of advancements and market relevance.
