An evening of winter recreation ended in tragedy Thursday after a young man died following a fall from a chairlift at Cypress Mountain Resort. Police confirmed the death later that night, calling the incident heartbreaking.
The West Vancouver Police Department said officers responded to the resort shortly before 7:30 p.m. after reports of a serious fall. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but the young man died at the scene.
Victim identified, family informed
In an update released Friday, police identified the victim as an 18-year-old man from Maple Ridge. Officers confirmed they notified his family and arranged support services during what they described as an extremely difficult time.
“The deceased has been identified, and their family has been notified and is receiving support,” police said in a statement.
Police call incident an accident
Police said all signs point to an accidental fall. WVPD spokesperson Suzanne Birch addressed the findings in a follow-up update on Friday.
“All available evidence points to this being a tragic accident,” Birch said. “There are no obvious indications of technical or mechanical issues with the chairlift. As the death appears to be non-suspicious, the investigation is now with the coroner’s office.”
Police added that they found no indication of foul play and handed the case to the coroner to determine the official cause of death.
Resort expresses condolences
Cypress Mountain Resort confirmed the victim had visited the hill as a guest. The resort shared a message of sympathy and directed further questions to police.
“Cypress Mountain extends our heartfelt condolences and support to the guest’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the resort said.
The resort did not release additional details about the chairlift or operations on the night of the incident.

Police said the incident affected witnesses and resort staff. Victims’ Services workers attended the scene to provide immediate help to those who needed support.
“If any members of the public haven’t had an opportunity to connect with us and would appreciate some support, we encourage them to reach out to us at 604-925-7468,” police said.

News of the death spread quickly across the region, with many expressing sadness over the loss of a young life. Cypress Mountain, a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding, attracts thousands of visitors each winter.
