Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, right, stands next to Hickman County Sheriff J. Craft as they address the press during a news conference at Accurate Energetic Systems, an explosives plant, after a blast resulted in multiple fatalities and others missing Friday, Oct. 10, 2025, in Bucksnort, Tenn.
A massive explosion destroyed an explosives plant in rural Tennessee Friday morning, leaving at least 18 people missing and feared dead, authorities said. The blast at Accurate Energetic Systems, a military explosives supplier, leveled the facility and scattered debris over a wide area.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the scene as “unimaginable.” He added, “There’s nothing to describe. It’s gone.” The sheriff said the tragedy hit especially hard because he personally knew three families affected. Officials are still confirming how many lives were lost.
Massive Blast Rocks Tennessee Hills
The explosion occurred around 7:45 a.m., Davis said. Aerial footage showed smoke rising from the hilltop facility, with debris scattered over at least half a mile. Residents as far as 15 miles away reported feeling the blast. The plant, located near Bucksnort about 60 miles southwest of Nashville, operates across eight buildings in wooded hills. The exact number of employees on site remains unclear.
Authorities initially reported 19 people missing, but the number was revised to 18 after one person thought to be at the plant was found safe at home.
Emergency Response Hindered by Ongoing Explosions
First responders faced challenges entering the plant due to continuing detonations, according to Hickman County EMT David Stewart. By Friday afternoon, officials reported no further explosion risks, and the area was under control. Grey Collier, spokesperson for the Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the scene was secured.
Accurate Energetic Systems expressed condolences on social media, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and community impacted. We extend our gratitude to all first responders working tirelessly under difficult conditions.”
Residents Shocked by Explosion
Nearby residents described a terrifying experience. Gentry Stover, living close to the facility, said, “I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it. About 30 seconds after waking, I realized it had to be Accurate.” Residents in Lobelville, a 20-minute drive away, reported homes shaking and loud booms captured on home cameras.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee urged citizens to pray for the families affected. State Representative Jody Barrett expressed concern about the economic impact, noting the plant is a key local employer.
Community Mourns and Prays
A candlelight vigil was held Friday night in a nearby park. Residents gathered to pray for the missing and sing “Amazing Grace,” showing solidarity with the victims’ families.
History of Industrial Accidents
The United States has a long history of deadly workplace accidents. The 1907 Monongah coal mine explosion killed 362 men and boys in West Virginia. Such events eventually led to the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1970.
Accurate Energetic Systems previously faced minor fines from OSHA for workplace safety violations in 2019. In 2014, another ammunition facility in the same community experienced an explosion, killing one person and injuring at least three others.
Investigations Underway
Officials are investigating the cause of the blast, but no details have yet been confirmed. The Tennessee authorities continue to work with federal agencies to determine what led to the catastrophic explosion.
The community remains in shock, hoping for answers and the safe return of those missing.
