A Texas man died after a Cape buffalo charged and fatally injured him during a hunting trip in South Africa. The incident happened on August 3 in Limpopo province while 52-year-old ranch trader Asher Watkins was on a guided safari.
Watkins had been tracking the massive 1.3-ton animal with a professional hunter and a tracker. Without warning, the buffalo charged, delivering a deadly blow.
Safari Company Speaks Out
Hans Vermaak of CV Safaris confirmed Watkins died from the attack.
“Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo,” he said in a statement. He described the event as “deeply traumatic” for those present and said the company is supporting Watkins’ family both in South Africa and in the United States.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Asher’s family, especially his mother Gwen, his daughter Savannah, his brother Amon, and stepfather Tony,” the statement continued. Vermaak added that the family had been long-time friends of the safari company.
Nature’s Dangerous Side
The safari operator’s website warns that Cape buffalo are among the most dangerous animals to hunt. These large animals have few natural predators besides humans and lions. They are known to be aggressive and are blamed for multiple hunter deaths and injuries every year.
The fate of the buffalo in this incident remains unknown.
A Life Spent Outdoors
Watkins was known for his passion for the outdoors and hunting. His Facebook page showcased photos of him posing with game including deer, mountain lions, and waterfowl. He was also the managing partner at Watkins Ranch Group, a company that sells luxury ranches, farmland, and other properties across the United States.
According to his company profile, Watkins had spent much of his life on ranches and in nature. He was described as a “proud and devoted father.”
Dangerous Game Hunting Under Debate
This tragedy highlights the risks involved in big game hunting. While many see it as a sport and a way to connect with nature, others question its ethics and safety. The death of an experienced hunter like Watkins is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wild animals, even for those familiar with the outdoors.
