The French twist is making a stunning comeback as the holiday season approaches, with social media buzzing over its timeless charm. With over 157 million posts on TikTok alone, this classic hairstyle is captivating audiences once again. Originally popularized by icons like Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve in the 1950s, the French twist has always been a go-to for elegance and sophistication. It saw a resurgence in the 1990s, with stars like Whitney Houston and Jennifer Aniston bringing it back into the limelight. Today, the style is more versatile than ever, embraced for both glamorous events and casual occasions.
Toronto-based hairstylist Kristjan Hayden describes the French twist as a style where hair is twisted vertically from the nape of the neck to the crown, creating a sleek and refined silhouette. It’s the perfect complement to holiday outfits, adding height and elegance whether you’re in a formal gown or casual attire. Kendall Jenner recently showcased this look at a Vanity Fair event, while Taylor Swift proved its adaptability by wearing it to a football game.

One of the French twist’s greatest strengths is its versatility, working beautifully with all hair textures. Hayden emphasizes that it’s especially easy to style for those with textured or wavy hair. The style’s popularity extends to celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Zendaya, who have worn both polished and textured versions of the look.

To achieve the French twist, start by prepping your hair according to your desired finish. For a sleek appearance, blow-dry your hair straight and add texture spray for grip. If you’re going for volume or texture, consider using a curling iron or setting your hair with rollers. Wavy or curly hair can be enhanced with a smoothing serum or gel to reduce frizz and add hold.

Gather your hair at the nape of the neck as if preparing for a low ponytail, then twist it upwards to create a roll. Secure the style with a U-shaped pin or bobby pins, making sure to hide the pins for a seamless finish. Hayden advises against opening bobby pins while securing the roll, as keeping them closed ensures they stay concealed while providing a strong hold.

Finish with a generous amount of hairspray, particularly at the back of your head, to ensure the style stays intact throughout the night. For flyaways, a toothbrush or styling stick with hairspray can smooth down stubborn strands around the hairline. Personalize your look by experimenting with a dramatic side part, leaving face-framing strands loose, or adding accessories like decorative pins or barrettes.

The French twist isn’t just a hairstyle; it’s a statement of elegance and versatility. From black-tie events to casual gatherings, this classic updo adds a sophisticated touch to any ensemble, making it the perfect choice for the festive season.
