The Russo Brothers (Empire Magazine)

July 18, 2024 Tags:

In a surprising turn of events, the Russo Brothers, known for their work on some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest hits, are reportedly in discussions to direct two major upcoming films: Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. This news has sparked excitement among fans, as Anthony and Joe Russo previously brought us iconic films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and the epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Recent speculation suggested that Shawn Levy, the director behind Deadpool and Wolverine, might step in to direct Avengers 5, which was previously subtitled The Kang Dynasty. However, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige seems eager to bring back the Russo Brothers to help shape the future of the MCU, especially as they navigate the complex Multiverse Saga.

The Russo Brothers have a strong history with Marvel. Their previous projects have not only garnered critical acclaim but have also achieved tremendous box office success. For instance, Avengers: Endgame grossed an astonishing $2.8 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of all time for a period, until Avatar: The Way of Water took the title. This impressive track record makes them a fitting choice to lead such important projects in the franchise's future.

Joining the Russo Brothers, Michael Waldron, who wrote for both Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is on board to handle the script for Avengers 5. This collaboration bodes well for the film’s direction, blending the Russo’s experience with Waldron’s fresh perspective.

The potential return of the Russo Brothers comes at an exciting time for Marvel Studios. With the release of Deadpool and Wolverine just around the corner, and the recent Emmy nomination for X-Men '97, the Marvel universe is buzzing with activity. Additionally, upcoming projects like Fantastic Four, which promises to take fans back to the '60s, and fresh trailers for Agatha All Along and Captain America: Brave New World indicate that Marvel has a packed slate ahead.

Currently, Avengers 5 is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled for May 7, 2027. As Marvel continues to expand its universe, the anticipation surrounding these films only grows, suggesting a thrilling new chapter for fans.

The Russo Brothers' possible return to direct these pivotal films could mark a new era for the MCU, promising exciting storytelling and high-stakes adventure. With a stellar team in place, fans have much to look forward to as they await the next phases of Marvel’s cinematic journey.
