When British comedian Amelia Dimoldenberg interviewed actress Sydney Sweeney on the red carpet in 2022, it wasn’t just their conversation that caught attention—it was Dimoldenberg’s dress. The black, floor-length gown, made from web-like rubbery strands, immediately fascinated Sweeney. “This is amazing,” she said, reaching out to touch the fabric. The unique piece was the creation of German designer Kasia Kucharska, whose work has been turning heads in the fashion industry.
Earlier this year, Kucharska received a prestigious €100,000 ($102,835) grant from the Fashion Council Germany and Vogue Fashion Fund. Along with financial support, the prize gave her the opportunity to showcase her collection at Berlin Fashion Week and receive expert mentorship in brand development. “It’s been an incredible journey,” she said from her studio in Berlin, where she presented her first runway show.

Kucharska’s inspiration comes from the intricate lace designs of the 18th and 19th centuries. Her studio is filled with references—portraits of historical figures, delicate lace samples, and photos of antique garments. Traditional lace-making, which dates back to the 16th century, was once a slow, handcrafted process performed by nuns before it became mechanized in the Victorian era. Today, lace production is mostly automated, but Kucharska is bringing back the artistry in her own unique way.
Her pieces, though unconventional, share similarities with traditional lacework. She handcrafts her designs using poured and 3D-printed latex, a time-intensive process that requires patience and skill. “Everything is handmade in our studio. It takes a lot of time,” she explained.

Kucharska’s designs feature abstract floral patterns, which form intricate bikinis, bodysuits, and layered ensembles. During her latest runway show, she styled her latex lace tights with skirts, dresses, and sheer shirts. Her use of playful, bright colors adds a whimsical touch to the structured designs, resembling childhood doodles.
Her secret liquid latex formula, which she has perfected over the years, allows her to create not just clothing but also accessories like bags—without using traditional sewing techniques. “Latex is a fascinating material,” she said. “It’s durable, biodegradable, and sustainable. You can do so much with it.”

Kucharska first experimented with liquid latex while studying at the Berlin University of the Arts. Over time, she realized its potential as a sustainable fashion material. Her innovative techniques have attracted celebrities like Julia Fox and musician Chloe Bailey, who have worn her daring designs.
For those interested in stepping away from traditional lace and embracing a bold new look, Kucharska has one piece of advice: “Be eccentric, be joyful, and celebrate life. Fashion should be fun and fearless.”
