A fast-moving fire tore through a Vancouver Island marina early Sunday, destroying and sinking three large luxury yachts and damaging several nearby boats.

Fire Breaks Out Before Sunrise

Emergency crews rushed to VanIsle Marina shortly after 7:30 a.m. after reports of heavy smoke rising from the waterfront. Chief Brett Mikkelsen of the Town of Sidney Fire Department said firefighters could see the smoke from the fire hall, located about two kilometres away.

By the time crews arrived, three 70-foot yachts already burned intensely. Firefighters moved quickly to stop the flames from spreading to other vessels and marina structures.

Firefighters Work to Control Damage

Crews battled the blaze for about 90 minutes before bringing it under control. While the fire did not spread further, officials said flames, smoke, and water damaged an unknown number of surrounding boats.

Despite the scale of the fire and the thick smoke, no one suffered injuries. Firefighters focused on keeping the situation stable while working in tight spaces along the docks.

Investigation Now Underway

Officials have not yet identified the cause of the fire. Investigators will examine the scene in the coming days to determine how the blaze started and what factors may have contributed.

The Town of Sidney later confirmed that environmental checks are now in progress. Officials said the work will ensure fuel and debris from the damaged boats do not harm the surrounding waters.

Environmental Response Begins

Environmental crews led by Western Canada Marine Response have begun assessing the impact. The marina area now has fuel containment measures in place, and surface cleanup continues.

Crews aim to prevent pollution while planning the next steps to safely remove the damaged vessels and debris from the water.

Marina Confirms Yacht Losses

In a written statement, VanIsle Marina confirmed the loss of three power yachts. Marina staff thanked first responders for acting quickly to limit further damage.

“The combined efforts of all agencies played a critical role in containing the fire and preventing further impact,” the statement said.

The marina also said fuel containment and cleanup remain active, with environmental protection listed as the top priority. Salvage planning has started and will move forward with the proper authorities.

Owners Notified, Community Affected

Marina officials confirmed they have contacted the owners of all three yachts. While the loss marks a major blow for those affected, staff asked for patience as recovery work continues.

“Our thoughts are with the affected owners, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our marina community as this work continues,” the statement said.

A Quiet Morning Shaken

The fire disrupted what began as a quiet Sunday morning along the Vancouver Island shoreline. While the marina avoided further destruction, the loss of the yachts and the ongoing cleanup will affect the area for some time.
