Timothée Chalamet has secured his place in history with a groundbreaking victory at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. The 29-year-old actor won Best Actor for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold. This marks his first major win for the transformational performance.
A Passionate Acceptance Speech
During his acceptance speech, Chalamet expressed his deep commitment to his craft. “I know we’re in a subjective business, but I’m really in pursuit of greatness,” he stated. He acknowledged his inspirations, naming legendary actors like Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando, and Viola Davis, as well as athletes like Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps.
Chalamet also reflected on the immense effort behind his role. “This was five and a half years of my life,” he said. “Playing Bob Dylan, an incomparable artist and a true American hero, was the honor of a lifetime.” He shared his gratitude with the film’s cast and crew, recognizing their dedication to bringing the biopic to life.
Breaking Records
At 29, Chalamet is now the youngest actor to win Best Actor at the SAG Awards. Previously, Nicolas Cage held this record at age 32 for Leaving Las Vegas (1995). However, Adrien Brody remains the youngest Best Actor winner at the Academy Awards, also winning at 29 for The Pianist (2002).

Chalamet’s victory came against strong competition, including fellow Oscar nominees Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Daniel Craig (Queer).
A Journey of Recognition
This is Chalamet’s first SAG Award win after three prior individual nominations. He was previously nominated for Call Me by Your Name (2017) and Beautiful Boy (2018). He also received ensemble nominations for Lady Bird (2017), Don’t Look Up (2021), A Complete Unknown, and the TV series Homeland in 2013.
Will Timothée Chalamet Win the Oscars?
While this win is a major achievement, its impact on the Academy Awards remains uncertain. Oscar voting closed two days before the SAG winners were announced. Historically, no actor has won Best Actor at the Oscars with only a SAG Award as their major precursor. Since the SAG Awards began in 1994, only six actors across all four acting categories have won an Oscar with just a SAG victory leading the way.
Chalamet’s performance has already earned critical acclaim, and this win adds momentum to his awards season journey. Whether it translates into an Oscar remains to be seen.
