Timothy Hodgson, recently named Canada’s minister of natural resources, shares a long professional relationship with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Financial Post

Timothy Hodgson once led the Canadian arm of a major global bank. He had a long, successful run in the corporate world. But when Mark Carney asked him to help Canada again, Hodgson didn’t say no. He left behind a quieter life he had planned with his family. Instead, he jumped into politics and is now the new Minister of Natural Resources.

Hodgson first worked with Carney in 2010, when Carney was the head of the Bank of Canada. Hodgson served as a special adviser there for about 18 months. After that, he returned to the business world but didn’t go back to his former firm.

A Big Role at a Crucial Time

Now, Carney and Hodgson are back together. Carney, Canada’s new Prime Minister, chose Hodgson to help change how the country handles energy and mining. This move sends a message: the government wants to bring new life to Canada’s struggling resource sector. Carney had promised during the election to make Canada a world leader in energy.

To do that, the government plans to set up a single office to speed up decisions on major resource projects.

Hodgson’s Path to Parliament

Just a few months ago, Hodgson wasn’t planning to run for office. He had stepped back from high-level business roles, hoping to spend more time with his wife and family. But something kept pulling at him. In a post online, he wrote, “I had envisioned a different next chapter... but something kept pulling at me.”

He won a seat in the Toronto suburbs and quickly became one of the most talked-about names in the new government. Hodgson also left several top corporate board positions when he entered politics.

A Man with a Mission

Friends and colleagues say Hodgson truly believes Canada is at a turning point. Reza Satchu, a longtime friend and business partner, said, “Tim thinks this is a moment of crisis for Canada.” Satchu believes Hodgson will push hard for real change in areas like productivity and attracting global talent.

The economy has avoided a full recession, but growth has been weak. Carney believes rising trade tensions with the U.S. are the biggest threat Canada has faced in years. He says it’s time to invest wisely and make faster decisions, especially in industries like mining and oil.

A Strong Background

Hodgson grew up in Winnipeg and served in the Canadian Armed Forces. He later became a chartered accountant, then moved into banking after earning his MBA. His work has taken him to New York, London, and Silicon Valley. He’s known as a sharp thinker who stays calm under pressure.

He’s also helped Canada’s military veterans and served on a group that oversees investment dealers. Many say his business sense and problem-solving skills make him a great fit for his new role.

People close to him believe he’ll try to cut through red tape that slowed down past projects. Andre Mousseau, a business executive, said, “Tim is a businessman first. He’ll handle this job that way.”
