Japanese entertainment giant Toho has announced its acquisition of GKIDS, the Oscar-winning animation distributor known for bringing critically acclaimed films to North American audiences. The agreement, revealed on Tuesday, marks a significant move for Toho as it expands its reach outside Japan.
Founded in 2008, GKIDS has become a major player in animation, distributing renowned films like Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, and Wolfwalkers. The company also manages the North American distribution of Studio Ghibli’s works. Earlier this year, GKIDS won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature with Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron, directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
Toho, famous for its Godzilla franchise and popular anime like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, has long been a powerhouse in Japanese entertainment. With this acquisition, Toho aims to grow its influence in international markets. The two companies have collaborated on past projects, including Weathering With You and Spirited Away: Live on Stage.
In a statement, Toho’s president and CEO, Hiro Matsuoka, praised GKIDS for its strong position in the U.S. market, noting how the acquisition aligns with Toho’s focus on animation and global expansion. “This partnership enhances Toho’s mission to bring exceptional Japanese and animated content to audiences worldwide,” Matsuoka said.
GKIDS founder Eric Beckman will remain as CEO, and Dave Jesteadt will continue as president. Both expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing that GKIDS will maintain its operations while benefiting from the support of a legendary parent company.
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
