Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning trailer. Paramount Pictures and Skydance
Tom Cruise is back doing what he does best—defying gravity, expectations, and death itself. The latest installment in the blockbuster “Mission: Impossible” franchise promises more heart-racing stunts and emotional sendoffs as Cruise’s Ethan Hunt prepares for one final mission.
Daring Stunts Reach New Heights with Tom Cruise
CinemaCon attendees were treated to jaw-dropping footage from “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” where Cruise once again tests the limits of movie stunts. In one scene, he clings to the wing of an airborne biplane flying upside down. In another, he leaps from an aircraft carrier into the open sea, raising the bar even higher for action thrillers.

The End of an Era?
As the title hints, this film could mark Cruise’s final outing as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. The 62-year-old star has led the franchise for nearly three decades, with each film pushing physical and cinematic boundaries. The previous entry, Dead Reckoning (2023), grossed over $570 million worldwide, but production costs and COVID-related delays impacted its box office performance.
Still, the film played a critical role in Hollywood’s pandemic recovery. Cruise acknowledged this onstage at CinemaCon while presenting director Christopher McQuarrie with the “Director of the Year” award.
A Tribute to Teamwork and Tenacity
Cruise praised McQuarrie not only for directing “Dead Reckoning” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” but also for helping implement safety protocols during the pandemic. “He didn’t do it for personal glory,” Cruise said. “We were able to keep people working safely throughout that time period.”
McQuarrie returns to direct “The Final Reckoning,” co-writing the script with Erik Jendresen. This marks his fourth time helming a “Mission: Impossible” film, solidifying his key role in the franchise’s evolution.
Returning Favorites and Fresh Faces
Franchise veterans like Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Czerny reprise their roles, alongside Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Angela Bassett, and Rolf Saxon. Newcomers include Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Nick Offerman, adding fresh dynamics to the high-stakes action.
Rhames’ character, Luther Stickell, underscores the gravity of the mission, telling Hunt: “Our lives are the sum of our choices. This is your calling. Your destiny.”
What’s Next for Tom Cruise?
While this may be the final chapter for Ethan Hunt, Cruise’s passion for action hasn’t slowed. He expressed excitement for another summer release—F1, a Formula One drama starring Brad Pitt and directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously collaborated with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick.
“[Brad’s] a very good driver,” Cruise shared. “I’ve raced against him… we’d finish shooting Interview with the Vampire and go race go-carts.”
Release Date Set
Paramount Pictures is set to release Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning in theaters on May 23, 2025. If the latest footage is any indication, this could be Ethan Hunt’s most explosive—and emotional—adventure yet.
