Sony's Tom Rothman commends David Ellison during the premiere of 'Fly Me To The Moon'.

Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman shared his perspective at the premiere of Apple's "Fly Me to the Moon" in New York City, addressing the current buzz surrounding the proposed $8 billion Skydance-Paramount deal.

Earlier, Sony Pictures Entertainment had joined forces with Apollo for a $26 billion bid for Paramount Global, although this bid didn't gain as much attention as Skydance's interest in Paramount. Regulatory hurdles, including restrictions on foreign ownership of U.S. broadcast networks, could complicate Sony's pursuit of Paramount.

Despite expectations favoring a Skydance-Paramount Global merger, there remains a 45-day go-shop period for other potential offers to emerge. If a superior offer arises, Skydance stands to receive a significant $400 million breakup fee from Paramount.

Rothman expressed respect for David Ellison, describing him as a capable executive who would lead effectively if the deal with Skydance materializes. The expected approval timeline for the Skydance-Paramount Global merger is later in 2025, at which point Ellison would assume the role of Chairman and CEO of the newly formed entity.

In contrast to Paramount's financial challenges stemming from debt associated with Paramount+, Sony remains financially agile and focused on film distribution. Sony's upcoming releases include the romantic comedy "Fly Me to the Moon," directed by Greg Berlanti and starring Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson, set to open soon.

"Fly Me to the Moon" marks Sony's continued commitment to the romantic comedy genre, following successful releases like "Anyone But You." Rothman emphasized that despite the dominance of streaming platforms in this genre, the theatrical audience for romantic comedies remains strong.

Rothman praised Apple's "Fly Me to the Moon" as a delightful and well-received film, underscoring its positive reviews and appeal to audiences.

Recently, Sony has enjoyed box office success with films like "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" and "The Garfield Movie," reflecting its active role in revitalizing the summer box office.
